dorming

apparently letts has cleaner bathrooms. i only visited anderson and hughes. anderson's bathrooms were as clean as they could be so i dont see how the there could be a diff. and i think the dorms are the same size and setup. hughes had smaller bathrooms than anderson though.

in letts there are less people and everything feels smaller, closer, nicer.... plus letts has more DRAW SPACE (which is VERY impt)

in anderson there are more people and it is a bigger dorm, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what u want

when i sent in my housing form last spring i requested hughes. i assumed that anderson and letts were going to be out of control and that i would never be able to sleep and i would be miserable. instead, i ended up in hughes on the all girls floor in a triple. thank god i was tripled because when i was detripled i was the luck yone (in my opinion) who got to move to southside.

during welcome week (when i still lived in hughes) it took me half the week to find someone to go party with/ be social with at all. im still mad that i missed half of the week because welcome week really is the time to meet people. im not saying that living on northside means that you cant have a social life but at the beginning of the year when you dont know anyone it makes it very very difficult. i moved to southside after 2 weeks when i was detripled and i immediately was thrilled. its not out of a control at all, its just normal, social people. they all go out on the weekend but its not like at 4 in the morning on a monday night i was being woken up by people screaming running up and down the hallways. and i live on anderson 1, facing the la quad so if anyone would be hearing noise it would probably be me. i LOVED my floor, mostly because anderson 1 only has 20 people on it so its really personal and almost everyone from the floor is staying for next year. your experience in the dorm really depends on your personality but if you plan on being social and getting to know a lot of people at the beginning on freshman year, you better be on the la quad at 930 every night of welcome week.

does anyone know what centennial hall is like?

yes. Centennial hall is a special on campus dorm for upper-class students (it is awarded to students with the most credit.) The same rules apply as in the other on campus dorm (such as it is dry, there are quiet hrs during midterms & finals).

It is located on the south side of campus and it is attached to anderson. What is different out centennial is that it is a suite style living situation. It consists of 2 dorm rooms and a bathroom in between them (meaning one toilet and one shower.)

The reason why I as a soph decided against centennial is that:
-there isn't a vanity like in the other dorms
-there is less space
-you have to clean your own bathroom
-the beds are harder because all of your draw space is under your bed

But lots of friends love centennial. For instance they put a table in between the bathroom and the rooms and they have a great set up for beer pong (of so I’ve heard.....)
It is more secluded. A lot of my friends believe that they have their "group" of friends so they don't need to live in a place like letts or McD whereas everyone on the floor are strangers.
Its fun living with your 3 closest friends....
A lot of the frats like to live together a frat delta tau delta is excited that they have like the entire first floor of centennial.

ugh.....i am in leonard because of my university college program [cross-cultural communication] and i am reallllllly nervous that i won't party at all or have any fun.
is it really that bad?

people who do UC programs and end up on the north side are NOT screwed when it comes to the dorming situation. YES it will be harder and YES you will be in a dorm that is more quiet, but as long as YOU make an effort to go out, meet people, go to the LA quad at 9:30ish 10:00 (which is right in front of Letts and Anderson halls on the south side) to get rides to parties... you shouldn't be in too much trouble.

good luck!!! (again this IS college... and AU... no one should EVER have trouble finding a pary...)

I don't know ANYONE on campus who doesn't know someone who lives on Southside...make that a TON of people. If you live on Northside you can totally go hang out on Southside no problem. Furthermore, it is very common knowledge that you can get into southside dorms (especially Anderson) without an ID no problem. Yes it is technically "illegal" so is drinking in dorms as AU is a dry campus etc. ...You can walk the campus from one end to the other in less than 10 minutes I guarantee you. Northside is like not even a 5 min walk from southside. I will agree that not many southsiders will come hang out on northside, but northsiders will be on southside quite frequently.

So only the upperclassmen dorms have private baths?
And living off-campus for Freshmen isn't an option?

Yes and Yes.

By the way, I would like to take this opportunity to comment on Alyssa's comments now that I have had some experience at AU. I live and Leonard(supposedly a terrible dorm) and I can tell you that this dorm is excellent, especially for what CCer's are looking for. The dorm is still social, just maybe not in the superficial, and somewhat retarded way that some southside floors are. Southside has more people that are willing to get wasted, but it also has some incredibly strange kids. While I would not say southside is a terrible place to live, northside is much more quiet when it comes time to study, while still close enough to go to the quad to find parties(in addition, no fire alarms!). Besides, the frat parties at AU are all the same and many of you(even if you are drinkers) will not be interested in them or may find them boring.

My situation in Leonard is pretty good. Half of my floor parties consistently every friday and saturday night, while the others stay in or do some sort of sober activity within DC. Some kids like frats, some like clubs, and others enjoy peace and quiet - essentially something for everyone. I, myself, have met plenty of kids from southside and am friends with a few. However, I party with northside kids as well, and for the most part they are less creepy and much more intelligent. I will most likely stay on northside if i decide to stay at AU next year.

In the long run the dorm situation does not really matter and this Alyssa girl really was discussing this issue from an incredibly narrow perspective.
