Sure, but can Geneseo keep your place, as though it is a deferrment, and let you in as a sophomore? Or would that be easily done anyway? I don’t know. I think you should call admissions and explain. And did you ask the FA office for more aid? Again, I don’t know if they gave you all they could.
@Lindagaf Oh yeah, I’ll do that! I’m not sure myself but might as well try!
Yes, I did call about more aid and their office only awarded me a one-time 1,000$ aid for my freshman year.
No, op cannot defer Geneseo for a year and attend Hunter in the meantime. If the school is unaffordable now, what will make things different a year from now.
If Op was not accepted into the honors program or EOP, it is highly unlikely that there will be additional monies coming.
The difference is one less year of OP having to come up with 10k.
Op needs to take the affordable option
It’s worth one last plea to Geneseo’s fin aid office before giving up. But without more money, I think it is unaffordable.
Hi, will someone fill me in on whether or not transferring would be a good option for me?
Your financial options are not going to change if you transfer to Geneseo next year. The only real difference is you will be able to borrow $6500 next year. If it not affordable this year, unless your financial situation changes dramatically for the better, it will not be affordable next year.
If you are looking for merit $$ you will not find it as a transfer student because the best merit $$ is given to first time freshmen.
We’re NYS residents. Our son got into several SUNYs; one was within commuting distance and the rest required dorming. The commuter college was affordable, and was the only one that would continue to be unless our situation changed, so that’s where he went.
If you and your parents can’t pay for Geneseo now, how will you afford it for 3 full years? Take the affordable school and focus your energies there.
@sybbie719 @austinmshauri Thank you for your input.
To be frank, I just really want to get out of the city and dorm. What about finishing my associates at Hunter and then transferring to Geneseo?
Hunter is a 4 year school and does not have any Associate degree programs. You are extremely fortunate to live in NYC and to have the CUNY system which gives you ~20 colleges that you can commute to. Somewhere there are students who are envious of you and the opportunity that you have been given to attend Hunter. Make the best of your opportunity and do well. Personally I think you will have more opportunities coming out of Hunter than Geneseo
Don’t get me wrong, it is s lovely school was just there today, but definitely not worth being a financial hardship to your family.
Time to dream a new dream.
You probably could transfer but how will you pay tuition? The financial package will not change much. You can borrow $2000 more dollars during junior & senior year. Your parents would have to get Parent Plus loans which is a terrible thing for poor people to do. If you are able to get outside scholarships they are usually only for freshman year. Worth trying for scholarships but you might be gapped worse next year. Maybe you can work while going to Hunter and sock away as much money as possible.
