Dorms at Lafayette?

hello! I'm trying to decide on a dorm building for my freshman year at lafayette. I'm female and would prefer a coed dorm. i really dont want a big "party" dorm. right now ruef is one of my top choices because i hear it's the only one with walk in closets; i really need space and organization, so i think would be great for me. the others i'm thinking about a conway and pt farinon. if you know anything at all about these or other dorms, please offer any info or advice!

also, i was wondering if any of the dorms have a piano besides kirby, or where else on campus i could have access to a piano

thanks!

Do you get to pick your dorm at Lafayette?

i thinkk you fill out a form in May about your personality so they can match you with a roommate, and also fill out which dorm/dorms you would prefer. i’m not 100% about this though. it’s also not definite that you’ll get the dorm you want

See Candyman’s post #108 in Thread III: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/lafayette-college/649823-ask-questions-here-part-iii-8.html#post1062294875

thanks, that really helped! (:

Yes…Candyman’s responses are great!! If you have any other questions, let me know!! I’m a current senior at Lafayette :-)

alright! what do you think about the dorms youve been in, any preferences, pros, cons?

Daughter spent this year in McKeen and moving to Keefe for sophomore year. Keefe is relatively new, with spiral staircases, and an elevator, with smaller and more intimate floors compared to McKeen.

i don’t know much about conway and pt farinon, but they are a liiiittle bit farther than some of the other dorms. however there are plenty of dorms down there as well as simon’s sandwich shop so its not like they’re isolated! mckeen is always hopping as it south college, but both can be preeeetty loud

@ pennsylvania:

I lived in ruef my freshman year and loved it. The staircases take a little getting used to and the no carpet / no ac is a pain sometimes, but other than that it’s a great building. Walk in closets = awesome. And it’s centrally located.

I lived in Keefe the fall semester of my sophomore year but I think Res Life is changing it up from this year and there will be no more freshmen students in Keefe.

w.r.t. PT and Conway, if you are looking for space, I’ve heard these are pretty small. Also, walking to classes in winter can be a pain. On the flip side, students in PT and Conway tend to bond really well with each other due to the small size of the buildings.

access to a piano - south has a sound proof music practice room with a piano that any one can use. The piano in kirby is not in the dorm, it is actually located in Gilbert’s which is a coffee shop attached to the dorm with a separate entrance. However, Kirby is an all male dorm so there’s no chance of you staying there.

My daughter lived in a traditional double in Watson her freshman year. Although not one of the more popular choices she loved it because it was NOT a party dorm and she likes to study in her room. She also liked Watson’s proximity to the science buildings, the library and the Williams Center. Because of location a lot of the students residing there are engineering and science majors, which reduced the frequency of late night parties. She liked Watson so much she and three friends opted to stay there sophomore year in a 4-person suite. The major drawbacks are the lack of air-conditioning, carpeting and elevators.

Although my daughter will be off-campus during the fall of her junior year she plans to change locations to Keefe for spring semester to spend some time with her fellow “environmental wackos” (and ironically get to experience a/c for the first time in a college dorm room).

Can anybody tell something about kamine? Will it be suitable for engineering students, location wise (like Watson)? and does it get too noisy there?

Thanks in advance

Kamine is a freshmen only, co-ed dorm located near the Sullivan Parking Garage. It is one of the dorms that has carpeting, an elevator and air conditioning. The rooms are a good size (not huge but not small either). One really big advantage to living in Kamine is that Simon’s - a sandwich deli with some amazing sandwiches - is attached to Kamine albeit with a different entrance.
Kamine is part of a residential set up that is located kinda downhill from the rest of campus. During early fall and spring, this is never really an issue although once it starts raining and snowing, it can get to be a bother, especially if you have an 8 am. Especially, if you are the kind of person who needs to go to the library or an academic building every night to study, then walking from Kamine every night can irritating sometimes. So, if you don’t mind a slight walk uphill in the snow at 8 am, then Kamine is a good pick.
Since Kamine is all freshmen and comparatively further from places like Farinon, you do tend to get form closer binds with the people in your dorm since you spend so much time there. Also, I consider living on a co-ed floor a much better experience that an all male / all female floor.

Kamine isn’t really a party dorm as such. It can get a little noisy there but that’s mostly just on the weekends.

Thanks a lot ryanshroff.
