Does anyone know which dorms at Swat are primarily for first years? Thanks.

The largest number of freshmen (around 75 I beleive) are usually in Williets, with freshmen also in Danawell, Wharton, Mertz, Parrish, the New Dorm (alice paul, i guess) and ML.

There is no dorm that is primarily for freshman students.

If you are in the class of 2010, you should meander over to Swarthmore2010.org...there are a lot of current students there chatting on relatively similar topics.

Something like 1/4 of the freshman class lives in Willets, last I heard. Freshmen are pretty integrated into most of the dorms, though.

is it true that a moat forms around ml after heavy rains?

There can be quite a bit of water in the road, but its hardly a moat. I could step over it.

Hey, everyone thanks for the info. Which dorm is best for quiet study? I mean I want to be around social people, but I don't want music blaring and people drinking and partying til 3 in the morning. Which one is warm cozy not drafty? I know that is a weird question, but I don't do well in cold drafty places. Thanks!!!!!!

You should probably try to avoid Willets.

The only surefire way to avoid Willets is to request single-sex housing. That puts you automatically in Parrish. Not sure how drafty Parrish is, though...

Putting sci-fi/fantasy on your sheet is pretty much a one-way ticket to ML, if you're interested in that.

"Putting sci-fi/fantasy on your sheet is pretty much a one-way ticket to ML, if you're interested in that."

Judging from the class of 2009, with the new housing dean this is no longer true.

Interesting! I wasn't aware of the change. I'd be interested to hear some MLers' perspectives on it.

I'm an MLer. A member of the class of 2009. From what I understand, of the ~6 or so new members of Swil, only 2 were from ML.

Parrish isn't too drafty in my experience, and the third floor triples (on the girl's side, anyway) are quite nice with water pipes by the window that get nicely warm, at any rate.
And if you put single sex, you may get Dana 3. And if you don't put single sex, you may get Parrish anyway (as did most of my hallmates, in fact)

I've heard Willets isn't as bad as it once was - Hallowell seems to be picking up the louder people. (I hope this is true - I'm in Willets next year...)

From what I can tell, Willets and Mertz would be the most "social" of the dorms where freshmen live -- mostly because they are larger dorms with common rooms and longer hallways. It's rude to shut your door, so there is more distraction. Mertz is mostly freshmen and seniors. Willets is almost all freshmen and sophmores.

Willets was the dorm of choice for sophmores last year. It sold out in the lottery very early. It's not an "animal house" dorm, but there's enough hustle and bustle and socializing that going to the library to get studying done is a good idea from what my daughter says.

Wharton is a "social" dorm, too...but has very few freshmen.

Hollowell has become more of a party dorm in recent years because it is one of the last dorms on campus where smoking is allowed.

Parrish and Dana would be the two quietest dorms for freshmen. Dana because it's small. Parrish just because it's Parrish.

To be honest, I wouldn't sweat it. In all likelihood, you'll live in four different dorms in four years at Swat, including one year in Willets.

Thanks for the information everyone. I can't wait to get there, and I hope I fall in love with the place!!!!
