Dorms @ Grinnell

my daughter will be an incoming freshman. any comments on Loose Hall

You can look up each of the dorms on their website to see maps and basic info: For example: https:// www.grinnell.edu /about/visit/spaces/loose-hall

Welcome, @allprse! My son will be a freshman at Grinnell too. I found this website that provides some additional information about the residents’ halls: https://www.grinnell.edu/about/offices-services/residence-life/residence-halls
Check out the Why Grinnell thread for more information about some families whose kids will be joining your daughter at Grinnell College.

My daughter starts next week as a freshman at Grinnell as well. In addition, I am a Grinnell alum AND lived in Loose for two years. I loved Loose, very convenient as it is the northern most dorm on south campus. If your daughter is on second, she may be lucky enough to have a loggia room. If not, she should make friends with someone on second floor on the west side of the hall. See you all soon!

I think Loose has the largest rooms–and the Loggia area is wonderful. It used to be a more “social” dorm back in the late 80s. I don’t know if it still is.

I just dropped my daughter off for GSP on Saturday and was surprised at how small her room was. She is in James, corner room (2 windows), very nice overall, but SMALL. No room for the desk and dresser to both be against a wall, but I’m sure she and her soon to be arriving roommate will figure it out. The lounge across the hall from her room is huge and has what appears to be a working fireplace, really, really nice. She’s excited and happy, that’s all I needed to see - the rest will work itself out.

Thanks for the report! I remember my first college dorm room. I barely had space to shimmy between bed and desk.

I’m an alum and spent an enjoyable year and a half on Loose 2nd. Loose rooms, especially loggia rooms went quickly in the room draws. South campus dorms are all fairly similar. Loose is the largest (large being relative…it’s still small), has the nicest lounge, has a laundry room in the basement and is the closest to the dining hall (at least among the south campus dorms).

My son is a freshman in Loose, 2nd floor. Andrew2199, when you say Loose is the largest, do you mean the building, or the rooms? My son’s room is fine, but definitely not large. Most of the other rooms on the hall are singles, so very few freshmen – that might be nice after a while, but made the room a very quiet place to be for the first few days!
