Dorms

What are Brown dorms like? I didn’t get to see one while I was visiting. Are they decent or really crappy?

they say freshman has to share with another person.
and I emailed one brown sophomore and she told me that Brown's dorm is better than Yales, i think it depends.
but what i learnt about Brown's dorm from Kaplan's 350(or 250?)best college in america says brown's dorm is no good but many students have to live in campus because the rental is high off campus.

I heard they were pretty bad too...
Any current students have a digital camera, let us see what the set up is like?
I was just at McGill U in Montreal, and I was blown away by the new residences. A HOTEL! Double beds, private baths, free mini fridges, concierge desk...

u are in McGill? are you american?
I'm going to apply to McGill too. I hope I can pick up some French in college

They're pretty bad. Don't apply to Brown for the dorms...or most of the facilities, for that matter. The education, people, and faculty are amazing. However, the dorms and many buildings are not.

I don't think the dorms are that bad... they are certainly better than the Columbia and BU ones I've seen. My room is carpeted, about 12x15 and there is plenty of room. In all fairness, I have seen some worse ones here, but by that, I mean the floors aren't carpeted, there are no built-in closets, and everything is cinder block.
There are plenty of nice suites and other rooms with private bathrooms and such. You can't really generalize a whole school's living conditions. There will always be good dorms and bad ones.
I live in Perkins, one of the all-freshmen dorms and it is such a close-knit community. I love it. Rumor has it that 80% of the marriages between Brown alums are between people who met in Perkins... I'm not sure how they know that, but it's cool if it's true.
Oh and the facilites are very top notch! As far as I've seen, there is nothing that I wouldn't expect for an Ivy League school. Brown takes very good care of itself. Come and see for yourself... the couple billion we have is put to very good use.
Well, I'm out.

Here is a link with a few pictures and descriptions, although the pictures are unflattering

The dorms at Brown, like most places, are really a mix. Some are in beautiful old buildings, with gorgeous lounges but crappy rooms. Others (the more modern ones) are in less pretty buildings but have nice, big rooms with lots of perks (private bathroom, large closets, etc).

Here are some other sites with better pictures

Which BU dorms are you talking about? A friend of mine has lived on South Campus and Bay State, and her dorms are awesome. (Then again, maybe I'm just biased because I went to CTY at Union College… now those are the pits.) If Brown's better than Bay State, then what are y'all complaining about? Are you expecting a hotel? :P

Sorry, I should have clarified... I meant Warren Towers. BU does have some nice dorms, but so does every school. The good comes with the bad, I guess.

Well I've lived in Champlin and East Andrews. They were pretty similar. No carpet. The room in Andrews had a sink, but the bathrooms were shared by the entire hall. In Champlin, each bathroom was shared by 4 people, but I thought were in pretty bad condition compared to the larger bathrooms of Andrews. Also, in Andrews we had very small walk-in closets and built in bookshelves that added a nice touch. We bought a rug for our room because the floors get pretty icky.

Maybe I just hate cinder block.

menghze-
haha, no i'm not american, i'm the one who replied to your other post to tell you that i'm chinese, canadian, and british. so we'll be two chinese girls applying to brown ED and mcgill regular. maybe we'll end up at the same place.

do they assign dorms randomly, and we find out what we got in the summer? or do they have us list our top choices? i dont know, some schools do that.

HEY,punchline05,
that will be very cool! but what kind of appearance do you have?
do you like white? chinese? or....
just curiousing.!!!!

To be honest, a lot of the dorms are very nice...I live in a corner room of Keeney, which is absolutley huge compared to most of the rooms. We've got enough space to have a couch in our room. It's pretty easy to make the rooms really homely.

My main concern is carpeting and cleanliness. Scuzzy dorms with peeling paint, moldy windows, and linoleum floors freak me out. ::shudder::

mengzhe, i still look chinese. actually, most people can't pin what i am, a lot think hawaiian or thai. it tends to be a big topic of conversation with my friends - they call me chinoise, panda, and hawaiian. and when i meet new people, i get a lot of "what are you?". Human, thanks.

There's definitely peeling paint (in some rooms) and linoleum floors. I never noticed any mold on the windows.

aah! a whole lot of peeling? and nasty sandy feeling linoleum? or is it ok despite them?

When I was there, I saw 2 different first-year dorms. Neither of them had carpeting, but most people had rugs, so if you don't like bare floors, that's definitely an option. They were also pretty big, at least some had room for a couch.

Not a lot of peeling, but where there is a little, some people choose to make it worse. The linoleum isn't sandy per-se, but it will turn your feet black if you walk on it barefoot.

However, a rug does sort of help, but they get dirty too pretty quickly.
