I would call res. life and ask. They usually have a pulse on the culture of each dorm, and there are dorms that have strong cultures, for better or worse, depending on what you’re looking for.

mauer or bushnell are definitely what you should be looking at. aldrich and chapin are not drug or alcohol free by any measure. plus i kind of hate the chapin environment. and there’s no laundry in chapin so it kind of sucks.

mauer is the most extreme quiet and substance free dorm, i think. it’s so far from everything else and sort of isolated. i don’t really know anyone well who lives there. bushnell is a better decision though imo. bushnell 2nd (substance free) has a great community! they probably have one of the most well decorated lounges on campus, haha.

fwiw, i live in peet and love it. res life does an amazing job at placing you where they think you’ll fit, i think.

also: if you don’t end up living in a substance free dorm, don’t sweat it. people drink but because of beloit’s really lax drinking policy they’re very responsible about it and it’s quite rare you’ll have to deal with loud and belligerent drunks, no matter where you live. people drink socially, responsibly. as long as you’re respectful, they’ll be respectful. it’s not like highschool where people think they’re so much cooler for the substances they choose to take, you know? just chill and you’ll be fine! are you going to visit beloit soon?

I’m not sure if Maurer is officially substance-free. It has a reputation as not being much of a drinking/party dorm, but I’m not sure if alcohol is officially not allowed there. It also has a reputation for being more quiet.

As far as other dorms go, boilingwax did a great job describing Chapin, Aldrich, and Bushnell.

I honestly don’t know all that much about Brannon.

Also, as someone currently living in 609 (freshman-only and substance-free) and loving it, I feel like I should give that dorm a bit of a shout-out. While it isn’t all-female, it is divided by gender, with girls on the top floor and guys on the bottom floor. It’s known for having a consistently strong community, and we have a really great lounge.

Also, if you’re not a fan of whatever dorm your placed in, you can switch after your first semester.
