Hello,

I'm a prospective student to UC Berkeley deciding whether I'd like to apply to Chemistry or Chemical Engineerg. I'd like to eventually double major in either, but I'd like to ask if I'd find it easier to do this from one major or the other, i.e., if I'm more interested in chemistry, is there any advantage in terms of capped majors or the like to get accepted in ChE and then double major into Ch rather than get accepted into Ch and double major into ChE?

I know at UCLA, for example, the engineering school is much harder to get accepted into there, so it makes more sense to get accepted in ChE and double major into less selective Ch rather than vice versa. Would any similar thinking apply to UC Berkeley?

I understand that my question may come off as, overambitious, but let's assume I have sufficient academic preparation/ research background to get accepted in and successfully complete Any of the above programs.

Thanks

Both chemical engineering and chemistry are in the College of Chemistry at Berkeley, although you can also major in chemistry in the College of Letters and Science. Based on the Hout report, the College of Chemistry does not differ in selectivity between majors, unlike the College of Engineering.

The two majors are described here:

[UC Berkeley, College of Chemistry – The Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering](http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/degree_programs/cheme_major/index.php)

Note that AP credit is of limited value for technical subject requirements:

Chemical engineering is generally regarded as having better job and career prospects than chemistry.
