Double major in Econ and MCB/IB . Premed.

Hey guys, I wanted a grasp of your opinions on double majoring in economics and MCB or IB. I will most likely be heading to medical school upon graduation (granted that I get accepted).

So, in brief, I guess what I really want to know is how difficult are Econ classes? Are upper divs easier than the pre-reqs? How woulod you rate the competition in major classes?

I mean, I have checked pick-a-prof and all, and statistically speaking, the grade distribution does not seem not nearly as competitive as pre-med reqs. But at the same time, I am concerned that these statistics may be misleading in the sense that it is much more competitive than it tells us.

Realistically speaking, I really cannot afford B's (okay, maybe just a couple-2 or 3 at most) in order to gain admission to medical schools. So all in all, I am on track as a pre-med, but I am concerned that double majoring in econ classes may significantly lower my GPA. Please do give your honest opinions!

Thanks much!

I would strongly recommend against doing that double major. MCB by itself is well-known for inducing a great amount of stress on its students. For both MCB and Econ, most of the required lower division classes are weeder classes, meaning the distribution of A's is not as favorable.

I agree with bearslair here. I think because most incoming freshmen were at the top of their class, they like to think up of the toughest double-majors they can do. In reality, getting a high enough GPA in MCB to get into med school by itself is pretty darn difficult, so trying to cram another major in is (for most students) suicide. Especially if your goal is med school, getting another degree in economics just doesn't make sense at all.

Yea I agree. If you're main goal is pre-med and getting good grades, you'd do best to concentrate on your pre-med courses. Normally I'd say it'd be great to pursue Econ as well, but getting good grades is no easy feat. Though upper division Econ tends to be quite lenient with grades, the lower division isn't quite as lenient. You will be competing with other Econ students who want to apply to Econ and also pre-Business students (since some of the prereqs overlap). Surely, a 3.5+ is very possible in Econ courses, but MCB/IB prereqs are no walk in the park, and if you're shooting for less than 3 B's, then good luck.. I'm not doubting you though, you could be a superstar for all I know :)

spend those time double-majoring on MCAT; it is going to kill you.
