Double major in Economics and Political Science or Economics and Business (Marketing Concentration)?
Hello Everyone and I apologize in advance if this post is a bit long.
First off, I just finished my freshman year in College. I am studying in the Middle East but I am probably moving to Canada or UK after graduation (depending on where my family is heading next).
I always wanted to be a journalist, however, the journalism/media department is very weak at my university and I believe that I am better of with a bachelor’s degree in something other than journalism (hopefully I might get a journalism MA).
Anyways, since I am attending college in the Middle East, I thought it would be a good idea to major in Political Science (considering the location I am at). Even though I was always interested in Politics, taking courses in the subject made me disinterested and unsatisfied with what I am learning. I just feel as though the discipline is very subjective. For example, I was writing a paper on Capitalism and its benefits (well that is part of what its about) and that really pissed off my professor because she is a socialist which compromised my grade. So, I just feel that the Political science department in my university specifically is not that good (It also requires the lowest GPA for declaring the major because no one chooses it anymore).
Having said that, I took an Economics class (it was relatively challenging due to the fact that I never studied except a day before the exam) but I found the discipline extremely interesting and unlike in Political Science I felt as though I am actually learning something and gaining skills! So, I decided to double major in Economics (BA) and Political Science. Until I came across the business school and I just loved the courses for the major there. The business degree is basically a Bachelor of Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing, Finance, or a General Concentration. I think I will select marketing because my economics major already has most of the courses in the Finance concentration and the Marketing courses are very interesting and engaging. Will not majoring in Political Science limit me for a certain kind of job or a better question is, Can an Economics degree get me a job that requires a Political Science degree?
Now, doing either double major will be around the same number of credits. Also, some may say that double majors are worthless and a waste of money. However, in my case, I have so many electives that I can use for a second major without the extra time (I only need 4 extra courses which I can take in the summer or winter semesters or even take an overload in 2 or 3 semesters). Another option is double majoring in Economics and Political Science and minoring in Business.
Also a major factor that made me think of business instead of Political science is that the business department at my university as well as the Economics one provide great internships for the students and the employment rate is exceptional in comparison to all the other majors.
I really do not know what I am supposed to do and would like some advice from you guys. I am using my Bachelor’s degree as a backup plan to my journalism career. I don’t know exactly what I want to do with my Bachelor’s degree yet but I would probably like to work in Marketing or any creative business oriented field. I also thought about working for NGOs but that is very difficult to do so its just a thought for me.
Note: I speak fluent Arabic and English and some french (not so well but I am working to improve that).
I am posting this in the Humanities major forum as well. Thank you soooooo much for your help and sorry for this LONNNG post. Have a great day!
