I’m a freshman at Colorado School of Mines and have been planning on majoring in Petroleum engineering since the beginning of high school. I am passionate about it and not quite as worried about job prospects as much lately as I have been doing well in school and expect to continue and I believe the oil industry will come back. The thing I am worried about is the limited places you can live as a PE. Im okay with moving wherever but am nervous that could change someday or that I have a reason I need to live somewhere else (wife, kids, family, parents sick, etc.) or I could just get tired of where I’m at and want to live somewhere else.
My question is, with a Petroleum engineering degree, is it possible for me to get jobs in other engineering fields that are more available in different locations? Id be really comforting to know I could get jobs outside of oil if I needed to for whatever reason… If not much outside the oil industry with PE degree, is there a double major, minor or ASI I could/should get that would help me get jobs in other fields? If needed, Im looking at mechanical, economics, or geology currently but open to suggestions all the way to just straight up switching my major. Thanks for the help guys.
was also considering a computer science degree to go with my PE…
Normally you can get the most helpful, relevant answers for this kind of question at the campus career center. Hopefully somebody with PE experience can chime in too.
I also encourage you to visit companies at the Mines career fairs (I think they happen fall/spring). If CSM101 course still requires a job fair visit, you may have already had your first look. In the spring you could ask some recruiters about your CS idea. (Check also with your advisor - it may take too many credits to be practical.)
