I might want to double major in economics and cs. Will that give me no social life at CMU?

The econ? Nah, the CS alone will give you next to no life though. I’m a double in Ethics, History, and Public Policy and Stats and I still have a nice fun social life. A lot of CS majors don’t as much though. I mean, they still go out on weekends (some of them), but they end up pulling a lot of all nighters to be able to do that. It depends how much you want it and what classes you take.

A lot of it also comes down to time management skills. One of my good friends came in with a decent amount of AP credit and was able to graduate in three years with a double in CS and math.

About half of my friends in engineering double majored; it’s really not that huge of a deal. It basically means all of you free electives will be aimed at a specific department instead of spreading them around a bunch of different things.

You might want to also look at just minoring in econ instead. I was a Materials Science major with a minor in physics. I could have double majored, but it required me taking a bunch of extra classes I really wasn’t interested in. Instead, I was able to take almost all the classes offered by my department in addition to a number of grad ones. If I had wanted, I could have gotten my MS with my BS at the end of my fourth year, but instead I finished a semester early and saved about $8k in loans.
