Hello, I want to become an architecture but also have a degree in history, so I was wondering what degrees of history overlap with architecture? It would be a great help for me to have some idea.
Architecture is a very demanding major. I don’t think it would be advisable to have a second major. I would take more electives related to architecture if I had the time for extra classes.
@nickelanarchy There are two paths to study architecture as an undergrad.
- The Bachelor OF Architecture (BArch) is a professional degree. With a BArch you can begin the process of becoming a licensed architect. The BArch is a 5.0 year program (or 6.0 years with work co-op). It is intensely focused on architecture. Although you would be able to add a few electives, double majoring in history would be difficult.
- The Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) IN architecture is a 4.0 year pre-professional degree. With this degree you would need to get a Masters of Architecture (MArch) in order to become a licensed architect. The MArch takes from 1.0 to 3.5 years depending on your undergraduate curriculum and the graduate school's requirements. BA/BS programs vary in intensity. Some would allow for a double major.
- You can get accepted into an MArch program even if you do not study architecture as an undergraduate, though getting the MArch may take longer. In order to be admitted to an MArch program you need to take some art studio, some art history and usually some physics and calculus. You also need to submit an art/architecture portfolio.
