Can one do a double major at Pomona? Specifically, pairing music with something else?
Thanks.

Absolutely, you just have to plan it out ahead of time so that you can fulfill all the breadth of study requirements as well as the double major requirements. Entirely possible and plausible

Thanks! Know anything about piano specifically? :)

Failsafe- how intense are the breadth of study requirements? I ask because I have a friend at a Texas state school who can barely even add a minor because his general requirements are taking all of his time.

They’re not hard at all to satisfy. I got 4/6 out of the way just first semester. The only one that might be a hassle is the foreign language requirement, but there are many ways to eliminate it.

Double-majoring is pretty tough, but about 8-9% of the school does it, so it’s doable. I second starting VERY early (look at the course catalog) because the prereqs for classes will hurt you if you don’t.

Piano is actually relatively easy to double major with, considering that your senior “project” is (if you’re doing performance) a senior recital. This consists of a 45-60 minute recital and the process involves a petition to the department for the recital, organizing a time/place, learning the music, and writing up program notes. It’s not overly complicated, and sounds (not a music major myself, though I’ve already had a solo recital) easier than writing a thesis. For other types of music majors, feel free to ask.

Doing a double major with music is definitely doable, and if you plan it correctly (and know what you want to do right off the bat), then you should also be able to consider study abroad if you were considering that too.

[General Education - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/administration/dean-of-students/new-students/guidebook/academics/general-ed-programs.aspx)

This should answer your questions about the breadth of study requirements. Only one class from each, a foreign language requirement (which is pretty easy to pass out of), ID1 and one PE course constitute the GE reqs. This is actually quite lax compared to other colleges. I heard that Mudd students require on the order of 10 humanities courses. At Pomona, if you really want to, you can get away with 3 humanities courses (one from Area 2 and Area 3, and music for Area 1).

(I’m a current Pomona student planning to do a double major…and I play the piano.)

^Thank you so much chipsnfries! This is very helpful!
