Double majoring - which math related major would be compatible/useful with International Relations?

I just transferred here (3rd year) as an IR major, but I would also like to pursue another major with IR that would be beneficial for me when I graduate - any recommendations?

I would like to major or minor in statistics, but I’m not sure if it the combination of it with IR would actually be useful. Or is it good to take classes for stats regardless of being an IR major? When I graduate I’m planning on using what I learned in my IR courses to help with 3rd world development/global + social equality.

Also, is it true that minors are “pointless”? If so, I’m willing to stay an extra year to double major but I would prefer to major in IR and minor in something math related so I can graduate sooner and move onto graduate school.

It’s hard to say. What kind of jobs are you looking at? Unless it’s something very quant intensive, even doing a minor in stats would probably be overkill, let alone a double major. On the other hand, if it is something very quant intensive, you’d be better off with a single major in stats and leave IR to electives.

Remember, many employers have a GPA cutoff. Few or no employers have a double major cutoff. Taking an extra year might also work against you in recruiting.

If you’re looking to go to grad school, all or most of the above also applies. What kind of grad school are you looking at?

I would agree with NavalTradition. It’s probably not necessary and it could end up hurting you. Also you didn’t post it but consider your background in math and weigh it against what you’d be taking for a minor/2x major.
