Double Majoring

I am planning on changing my major to Architecture, but I want to keep my current major of International Relations because of scholarships and I am still undecided about law school after I graduate. I feel like it would be a good idea because when I graduate I have the option to either get a law degree or my masters in Architecture. I am just worried that law schools will look down on the Architecture major or the two majors won’t benefit one another. I guess I am just looking for a second opinion on this?

I’m not an expert in law school admissions, but I can’t imagine that if your grades and LSAT scores are good, that having two unrelated majors would be an obstacle. The real issue as I see it is whether you can maintain two majors and still keep up the work demanded by your architecture studios. At some schools, even for a BA or BS in architecture, long nights at the studio are standard procedure, which may limit the possibility to double major.

Make sure you have space in your schedule to fulfill the requirements of most MArch programs (art history, art studio, calculus and physics). Generally, these would be covered in a BA or BS in architecture or architectural studies, but you’ll want to double check. If you decide against double majoring in architecture you can still get into a good MArch program as long as you fulfill the program’s admissions requirements and as long as you have a strong portfolio.

Lastly, look at financing. MArch programs are expensive and funding, while available, is limited. Compared to other professions that require substantial educational commitments, entry level architecture positions are low paid, so think about how you will finance this degree.
