Double Majoring?

I’m going to be a Freshman at Brown next year. I’m most likely majoring in chemistry, but I was considering doubling in either music or math. Can this be done in 4 years, or would I have to stay for a 5th? Thanks for the help people

My interviewer told me that you can do it in 4 (he did), you just wont have the formality of having 2 majors written on your diploma.

Even if one of your majors is a hard science?

it can absolutely be done.

but i'd only recommend concentrating in two subjects if you are positive that you are really committed to both. the whole point of a liberal arts education is to educate yourself broadly, while also developing a rigorous understanding of at least one subject area--brown will let you do what you want but doubling in chemistry and math would leave little time for anything else. at the end of the day there is nothing wrong with devoting yourself to chemistry and then picking out the math and music courses you find interesting.

My understand is that if you double major without the fifth year ScB/AB program, though on your transcript it will say that you fulfilled the requirements of both majors, the actual degree with have the ScB.

I may/probably am doing a chem major too...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am concerned with getting a broad, liberal education. At this point, I'm more interested in chemistry and music anyway. And I've been obsessing over my first semester classes for the last few weeks because I want to explore so many different areas.

Only one major goes on your diploma anyway, so you might want to consider focusing on chemistry, and exploring music and math out of interest without getting the major.

what is on your diploma doesnt matter in any practical sense...

" to what supertara said. Your RESUME and TRANSCRIPT are what count. When you apply for a job, they aren't going to ask to see your diploma. They will ask to see your transcript and such.

if you fulfill the requirements for two majors, but only get one major on your diploma, is it possible to get any diploma-form credit for the other one? like a minor?

You CAN get a second major, it just wont be on your diploma

Also, you can get an AB in chemistry which is only 10 classes instead of the 20 required for the ScB.

Suppose you major in History and Economics (both ABs). Would both of them appear on your diploma?

James--
It actually works out to closer to 14 or 16 courses for the Chem AB because of prerequisites needed to take some of the directly required courses.

I am not sure on the two ABs, I still think only one shows up on the diploma itself, but both on transcript.
