Downward Trends

I am a rising senior and I’m really worried about my GPA. I had a 4.0 Freshman year, a 3.05 Sophomore year, and for Junior year I have a 2.3. The significant drop I currently means I have a 3.07 unweighted GPA and a 3.34 weighted. I really want to change my GPA by taking AP classes outside of school. What are my chances of getting into college with the plummet in Junior year? Do you think college level courses outside of school in addition to being in full IB is realistic or suicidal? As I know junior year is really important. I would appreciate a prompt response.

Thank you!

That is quite a drop. The only way I would see a college “overlooking” that kind of a drop would be if your course load was significantly more rigorous your junior year. And even then, going from an A GPA to a C might throw major red flags. But, then again, it will all depend on the colleges you apply to and how competitive they are. And in regards to going full IB, that may be unrealistic in your case. Taking IB courses and succeeding in them with high marks is definitely a great attribute, but taking those types of courses and earning low grades may not do you any good. If I were you, I would challenge yourself with the courses you take, but don’t bite off more than you can chew. Best of luck!
