Hi I am really interested in the dramaturgy major in the school of drama and I was wondering if anyone could speak for the program. How selective is it? How many applicants are there and how many are accepted? What does the school look for in applicants? How involved are students in school performances? How intense is the academic side of the program. Thanks.

Hi! As luck would have it, I know several dramaturgs and could put you in touch with one if you would like.

The program is selective – all of the college of fine arts’ programs are very selective. However, the job opportunities are plentiful and internships seem fairly easy to get from what I’ve seen. CMU’s program is very rigorous. You will have dramaturg-specific workshops and courses, and will be assigned to multiple productions as a dramaturg before you graduate. You will also work on the crew of shows before you are allowed to be a show dramaturg – you’ll get a look at what goes on behind the scenes and shadow senior dramaturgs in their duties.

I don’t know much about what the school looks for in a candidate, but I would assume it’s more or less a combination of passion for theatre, excellent writing and communication skills, and a demonstrated interest in history/costume design/set design. If you have directed shows at your high school, this will help out a lot.

That is some excellent information thank you! Is it true one must submit a sample of research and dramatic writing at 1000 words a piece to apply? Also, what kind of jobs do dramaturgy majors end up in after graduation?

Dramaturgy is all about the research writing. You aren’t expected to write research papers at the level of a full-fledged dramaturg. However, this is usually research done about a production before its presentation, to aid in the process of setting up the production.

Take a look at that site. In CW and English we are sometimes given dramaturgical references to help write pieces set in different times or locations. That list of bullet points covers most things I’ve had to write about when compiling a creative research paper, and should be fairly comprehensive.

Could a literary analysis research paper from high school be used? Or should they be related to theater in some way? I feel that some college submissions expect you to already be proficient in whatever they ask and I hope as you said this isn’t the case at CMU.

No, a literary analysis is -definitely- not the same as a research paper for a play. My advice would be to create one from scratch – either about a play your high school is putting on or a play you are particularly passionate about.

Hello everyone!
I’m currently a senior in high school, and I just got asked to complete a skype interview with CMU. It’s an incredible school, and I really would like to get accepted. Do you think you could give me some insight on what the interview will entail? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!!!
Aggie
This post is from 2011, I think you should move this to the RD thread. And if you are talking about general interviews, then all they ask is what do you do in your free time, what classes do you take, what is your favorite class, why CMU, and other basic stuff.
