I understand that I should dress nice for a college interview, but can I still dress in my style? I'm really fashion forward and a "hipster." I'm not saying that I will dress in like a crazy hippie dress with like dreads or something, but can I still wear something that isn't like the typical "preppy" ivy league or top private school look?

If you couldn’t, would you want to go to college there?

I think there are plenty of Ivy Leaguers who don’t dress “like the typical “preppy” ivy league…look.” Certainly, there were when I was in college (at an Ivy).

I guess you could look at it as saying I wouldn’t want to go there if they’re going to judge me on my clothes. Maybe it won’t make a difference, or maybe you’ll get some old fart how has worn a suit and tie every day of his life since he graduated the place in 1879…

So, it really comes down to whether you want to take a risk or not, and how strongly you feel on the issue.

Of course, if you get a broad-minded interviewer, your attire could lead to an interesting conversation and be a plus.

You always dress up-even if the culture of the corporation is laid back. The interview suit starts the sales pitch that you are a respectful and intelligent person. Once on the job you can relax into the business culture.

I would always wear business casual to an interview. Doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it though. Scarves and jewelery can make a real difference.

I don’t disagree with the other advice. I assumed that the OP is talking about being dressed up without being buttoned down.

I think that’s fine.

I had the same impression as Sikorsky as to how OP intended to dress.
