Drinking

I believe they raised the drinking age back to 21 because drunk driving deaths skyrocketed when the drinking age was 18.

Anyways, in my opinion if you plan on drinking you should start in high school. Based on my observations, those who did not drink at least a year in high school had bad experiences with alcohol in college. Also you have a lower tolerance which is dangerous and lame. Do it if you want, but don’t start your drinking at college ragers.

@Sirius: I’m not taking it personally; I’m just emphatically responding to an inept argument. It’s my inner debater; what can I say?

You know what’s funny? I don’t drink. I plan to, but I don’t currently. I’m simply arguing on the side of reason. And I’m almost 17, for your information.

@ Aliance
I’m sorry your post bothered me enough to actually respond to it.
Err what?
It matters because it’s happening.
It matters because I only get one shot and that makes it all the more important. I don’t take a lot of risks because I’m alive and I just get one life.
I believe in things because to me they make sense, I don’t have a set rule of beliefs because I choice what seems right to me,
No one needs to poke me and prod me and say “If you don’t listen you’re going to a bad place missy” I just know what I think and that’s enough.

@Studious
Any way if I sound against its because it seems risky to me.
But hey I’m the kid who has her next 10 years meticulously planned and I like it.
Not everyone is me. I get that.
I didn’t assume anyone who was arguing drank in high school actually. I don’t know if it came off like it did,
I just don’t think it makes sense, so I argued against it. Poorly I’m afraid I’m not properly researched against it (Hey hey I’m arguing the constitutionality of a court case for Youth and Government I’m a bit tired of research and citations)

@ Siruss
You do only have one shot! I would never attack you or force anything on you. I just inquire if that one life worth living off what “seems right” to you? Maybe you are always right or your thoughts are never off, but if so much could be at stake, wouldn’t it be worth searching for something more definite than whims or your own thoughts?

Of course, it would be easier not to. Again, it could be easier for someone to drink, so the ease of such shouldn’t matter in the issue. If you are picking and choosing what is wrong and not, what if you choose wrongly at some point? Rhetorical questions- Don’t want the thread to get too off topic. Preserving your life and not wanting to are valid reasons not to in themselves- my mind only formulated questions when morality was brought into play : P.

I’d like to hear more of OPs opinion on what he should do.

^ I second jt’s post. Has OP even responded?

Just got back from Debate Academy, and this is s jumbled mess of about 4 different debates:
THB in drinking under the legal age limit
THW lower the legal drinking age to 18/16
THW abolish alcohol
THBT drinking alcohol is a bad thing

Maybe we should focus the argument more on one…

In my opinion (because everyone’s entitled to their own) drinking should be left to adults. If you can’t handle a drink, don’t drink. If you’re not old or responsible enough to take care of yourself, don’t drink.

Just make sure you can handle it.
Because if you can’t, you don’t want to be the incoherent fool who everyone wishes would just go home and throw up somewhere else.

i vote for abolishing alcohol since i think it’s one of those things humanity would be better off without access to.

This has already been stated earlier in the thread, but if you plan on drinking in college I HIGHLY recommend you start at some point in high school.

I have never personally drank, but thats mostly because I’m a wimp when it comes to the taste of liquids (I only drink water, apple juice, milk, and some orange juice). If you are smart about it, there is very little that could effect you negatively. I’m not saying go get wasted every weekend or anything, but if you feel comfortable doing it (and know you can be smart about it) then go for it.

wow. just…wow. it’s not a big deal, guys.

Drink because you want to, not because you’re being pressured into it. It’s a great way to loosen up and have some fun. Be smart, be safe. Start out slow and learn your limits.

^ Thank you! Thats how it should people approach alcohol.
But its when people dont know their limits and/or abuse the use of alcohol is when ***** goes down and apparently that includes most alcoholic consumers so thats the blatant reason why alcohol is discouraged

The best thing is to be smart about it. I’d say if you haven’t touched alcohol, try some in a “safe” environment before you go to a party and drink, just so you know what you’re limit is beforehand. No one wants to deal with an over-intoxicated person puking and passing out.

I’ve never actually had alcohol before. Mostly due to the fact that people at my school drink every weekend and really over drink. It’s not the environment I’d want to be in.

The US Government established a minimum drinking age of 21 in 1984 to help prevent drunk driving deaths, and it seemed to have worked. [Drunk driving statistics](Drunk driving statistics)

Think about your life and the consequences so that again you never think about drinking alcohol. stop drinking alcohol or taking any kind of drugs.

Because that worked out so well in the past.

My mother’s alcoholism screwed up most of my childhood, so I don’t drink and I don’t ever plan to. But I know that the world isn’t going to end if you drink, and you won’t immediately become an alcoholic and ruin your life. That takes some work.

But I still don’t think you should drink underage, especially with your current motives…you seem to be easily affected by what you think everyone else is doing, so it seems rather likely that you’d do something stupid if you drank.

Because the legality or illegality of something doesn’t determine whether it’s ethical or not. All kinds of horrible things used to be legal.
Also, you have a really stereotyped view of teenagers.

There doesn’t need to be a penalty for an action to be wrong.

Because it makes life suck less for all of us.

You’re not a good person just because you do good things.
Drinking doesn’t make you a bad person, but if you were an axe murderer or something you wouldn’t be a good person just because you went on a mission trip.

The 21 drinking age is pointless…considering the amount of drinking that goes on in college, why not make it 18 again?

^^lol look at the post by Kieran06 3 spots above yours…

Anyways, I can’t stand being around drunk people, so I really try to stay away from alcohol. I don’t hate people who drink…it’s just, well, similar to Halcyonheather-my childhood was pretty messed up by my family’s alcoholism.
