dropping a class

Despite having been vacinated, DD has been out of commission for nearly 2 weeks with the flu (Weds. and Thurs. at health services w/ 103 temp; relapse on Saturday/Sunday - - secondary bact. infection).

Profs have postponed her midterms until after Spring break, but one performance course remains a problem. She's been too sick to participate in the last 5 classes, 7 including this weeks' classes on Tues. and Thurs. D managed to lift her head off the pillow long enough to tell me she may need to drop the performance course.

Anyone know the deadline for dropping a course?

And what is the first-year "free" drop?

Thanks.

OK, I just checked the web site and I see that the ordinary drop period has passes. So - - what about the freshman free drop?

Thanks again.

Free drop is the same as the last day to change the grading option, which I think is April 4. She'll need signatures from her advisor, the professor, and the class dean (but for the dean you can usually leave it with the secretary and it'll be signed and delivered to the registrar for you).

She can use her free drop to drop a course up until the 9th week of class (which is probably April 4). She'll need to get the form from her class dean's office. She might as well use it if it's a performance course, because you only get one free drop your freshman year and if you don't use it, it dissappears. If she has any questions, she should email her class dean, that's what they're there for.

Here's the info from the Dean's website

FREE DROP

A student may not drop a course after the end of the fifth week of classes. However, on two and only two occasions during her years at Smith College -- once during her first year; once during any subsequent year -- a student may drop a course at any time up to the end of the ninth week of classes, for any reason, without penalty. The drop form requires signatures of the instructor, adviser and class dean and is only available in the Class Deans Office, College Hall 101.
