Dropping an Honors/AP Course for VTech Admission

My brother is a junior in high school and he is taking regular: english, math, spanish, history but also honors physics and AP Biology. He cannot handle Honors Physics with AP Biology and wants to drop one of those classes: either drop AP Bio and take anatomy or drop Honors Physics and take government. However, the drop will show up as a WP on his report card (Withdraw-Pass). Will this hurt his chances at VTech if he does drop one of those classes?

I don’t think the point is if dropping the class will hurt him, as you’ve already stated he cannot handle both classes. The advanced classes do no good (and can actually harm) your transcript if you can’t keep your grades up while taking them. He needs to meet with his GC, as well as both teachers, decide which class would be of greater value, and if he continued in that class could he keep a high grade. It does no good to drop the honors class and get a C in the AP. He’d be better off keeping the honors class and getting an A.

He also needs to see if there is any class offered on a semester basis so that he doesn’t have a complete blank for the second half of the year. If not, perhaps he could be a TA.

Thank you so much this was really helpful! What if he manages to get a B in the AP if he drops the Honors? I believe that if he dropped the AP he would be able to get an A in the honors, but I don’t think he will be able to get an A in the AP. Also, what is a TA?

Glad this was helpful. Online help can give you some direction, however it should never take the place of information from your brothers teachers and GC. Since he’s struggling I would suggest he try to meet with them as soon as possible. They know his strengths and can give the best advice.

A TA is what’s commonly known as a Teacher’s Assistant. It may look better than an empty class period.
