Drum and bugle corps

how time consuming is the air force’s drum and bugle corps?

this corps doesnt march in cadet parades like the navy’s does right?

I've actually heard doing something like the D and B Corps wil actually help your stress load, since you get away from dinner, which is where a lot of harassment takes place your 4 degree year.

Dont know how true this is...makes sense.

dinner's actually optional, I know they have practice almost every day so it gets them out of training sessions. But that's not really a good thing since kids who don't show up to stuff are looked down upon by their classmates. Really, it's better just to go. Most of my friends that I've talked to in D&B don't like it, partly because apparently the director sucks, and are getting out after this year (they make you sign a contract that you have to stay in the first year if you sign up, so some people quit after freshman year). Not saying it's all bad, though. If you love to play in a band, by all means join, you don't have to sign that contract the first day, and some people love it. But definitely DON'T join to get out of stuff, you'll hate it. It's a really big time commitment, but for some it's worth it, just join for the right reasons. It would be good to talk to someone who's in D&B, I just know that I generally get a pretty negative vibe about it from those in it. If you want to continue to play your instrument, but not with a big time commitment, you should join the orchestra. We practice once a week and at concerts/ceremonies/Church services, it's really relaxed and a lot of fun. What do you play?

Nick plays the tenor sax and clarinet. Any opportunities to play the sax at AFA?

oh there are orchestras? i couldn't find anything about that from the site.

do you know if west point has orchestras too?

i thought all of the service academy bands and orchestras were made up of hired professionals.

No way will I join next year...Everyone keeps saying "you should" but I can't see how it is worth the time.

Does everyone like the "band"? I was at the Citadel and corps absolutely despised them. A matter a fact they started playing at 4 in the morning and everyone in the barracks started throwing trash down on them. It was quite a site. They are a separate "regiment" and everything. If anyone applys to the citadel, don't list you play an instrument!!

yup, we have an orchestra, but it's small-time, which is cool because it's relaxed. D&B gets something called LOS, which means they get out of all sorts of stuff and practice every day, where orchestra only gets out of stuff when we have a concert or something and our conductor gets special permission, but we only practice once a week, real casual but a good time. I'm not sure about west point, but the probably do the same thing. We've probably performed about 10 times this year. I like it. and it's not like everyone hates the band, if you want to be in it, go for it, but I'd talk to someone in it first, since a lot of people don't like it and want to get out.
