I need a laptop that would last me a very long time. The apps I'm going to use are along the lines of Microsoft Office, firefox, youtube, movie players, etc... I'm a chem e major, so I will have to use matlab... For anything that's more cpu intensive, I will probably resort to the public computers in the library.

I've pondered for a long time whether a low voltage processor like the SU7300 could meet my needs and still last me a long time. I would like a computer that will be able to keep up with the updates for Windows7, and not become super slow 5-6 years down the line.

So... specs I'd like:

processor: stated above (I'd like it fast )
screen size: 13.3-14.1 (anything else is iffy)
battery: meh... doesn't battery life suffer as the laptop gets older anyway?
CHEAP as possible

Acer 4820TG
i5, HD5650, 500GB, 2-4GB ram. Best thing is that its very light for its size 14inch, has a dvd burner and has around 8hrs battery life on web browsing and non intensive tasks.

I don’t think. CPU intensive and low voltage processors don’t often go together. The laptops that are good are more expensive. Probably $800+ for a good CPU, 4-5 hrs battery, and portability.
