I am currently a Junior in HS and am creating a list of colleges that offer me the chance to persue two different majors. I have many passions in life, and I do not feel that I am at a stage in my life to give one up for the other. I love the sciences, particularly physics. Yet I have a deep passion for Musical Theater. I am ranked academically high, and searching for a school that meets all of my criteria has proved to be challenging. I am looking for a college that:
- Allows a double degree in musical theater and physics, while still giving me a life ;)

Has a professional , conservatory style approach to musical theater with dance and music, without being overly demanding on the course load.

-Is in the Northeastern US.

---- I am open to a BA or a BFA, as long as it reasonably allows me to double major.

By the time that I graduate, I will have completed AP US History, AP English Literature and Composition, College Calculus, College Spanish, College Phychology, and College Sociology. This might help me out on the course load.

-Is academically challenging. However, not TOO challenging. My life has been so entirely devoted to education for the past several years. I need to find more of a balance in my life. A school that is challenging but not OVERLY competitive would be ideal.

I am not positive which career road I want to take. I feel that getting an education in both will help me figure that out.I may want to perform professionally. I have always dreamed of being in a large-scale musical production, yet I love to learn. I woul be willing to compromise a bit on the academics if it meant going to an outstanding MT program. I feel very lost right now.

Muhlenberg college seems to offer me what I want. It has a great MT program and allows a double degree in an entirely different field.

Does anyone have some instight on this for me? Thanks!

Before I finished reading your post I was thinking “Muhlenberg”. It has a wonderful theatre program that still allows time for other studies and I believe is also well thought-of for its science curriculum.

If/when you visit Muhlenberg, set up a tour and meeting with Charlie Richter in the theatre department. He developed the theatre program there and is a wealth of information. Also be sure and schedule an interview with an admissions counselor. They put great stock in a student showing interest in their school.

BWayDreamer – I replied to your PM, before reading this post… assuming you scored the requisit grades on AP exams… the AP and college courses you list would make it a little easier to double major or dual degree with Physics at JMU.

It seems like a BA route might be your best bet. In that regard, Muhlenberg is one great option. So would James Madison, Wagner, and American be worth a look.

If you did a BFA, NYU/Tisch would allow for a double major.

While not in the Northeast per se, I would suggest Northwestern University, though I don’t know your academic qualifications which surely matter in this respect.

PS, clearly not in the Northeast, I would investigate Elon too.

Thank you everyone! Your replies are so very much appreciated. I am extremely confused right now. My heart is leading me to pursue both concentrations in my near future, but apparently not many colleges agree with my heart

It comforts me to know that the five colleges that I have researched in-depth are exactly the five that have been mentioned:

Muhlenberg
Wagner
American
James Madison
Brandeis

I have also looked into Northwestern and it does seem like a good program. I have not yet thought about Elon.

Soozievt, I originally had the impression that NYU Tisch did not allow a double major. What program are you referring to?

You most certainly can double major when in the Tisch BFA Drama/MT program. It is not easy to do but many do it. It is even easier if you come in with some AP credits. But it can be done no matter what. As well, some people combine the BFA in Acting/MT with a Minor in something else. So, the answer is, yes, Tisch’s BFA Drama/MT does allow a double major.

I think a BA may fit you well, but if you want more conservatory training or a BFA, NYU/Tisch is one where a double major is possible and that is not the case at a number of BFA programs.
