Submitted my ED application last night!!!

We were affected by Sandy and son got his part of app done on the Monday of the storm before the internet went down (power had gone down, but generator kept things going). But since school was closed all week, the teachers could not get their recommendations in. Admissions has assured us that even the Nov 4th deadline is not firm… especially if they look at where you live. It still makes me uncomfortable, but at least our part is done. I remember way back in October, telling him to plan to get it in on the sooner side, as you never know what can happen. Well, a hurricane of this measure was not the kind of thing I was thinking of!

Just got an e-mail today, dated 11/2, stating that applicants applying for aid need to have the CSS Profile done by 11/1 in order to be assured that the package/offer would be ready with the decision. Doesn’t really make sense, does it?? We called, and they said the 15th is actually fine (which seems to be what website says). If Duke wants high quality applicants from the Northeast, they really need to be a bit flexible here!!

Splashdown, that is such a great story!!! My son would have LOVED to be at that game! I’m gonna have him read your description…

Philovitist - I see you are still on this thread. So did you change your mind about Duke? Just curious… I have two other sons who will be going into the STEM fields, and I don’t see Duke as being right for either one of them. My eldest is the one interested in sports and who loved the combination of sports, spirit, and academics. The other two could care less (although one is an avid racquetball player, he’s still not a “sports fan”) and I’m sure would be better suited to more techie schools. My youngest (a freshman now) I think would be a perfect fit for Rensselaer!

Aspiring High - Thanks for starting this thread and great job getting that app in! Good luck in the process! I expect we will all be back here in mid-December biting our nails!!

Has anyone gotten a call for an interview yet? I’m getting rather nervous… I submitted my application over a month ago and still nothing…

@topstardog, it seems that applicants are just starting to get calls this week for interviews. A few have already had them, & some others have them scheduled. Not to worry, I’m pretty certain that most have not had their interviews yet. (My daughter applied 10/16, & got a call last week. Her interview is coming up this week.) Good luck!

Ahh, okay. Thank you very much! I submitted my application on October 3rd.

Could it also be that I haven’t received a call for an interview because there isn’t anyone in my area? I live just over an hour from the closest city; I don’t know how far is considered too far to travel for an interview because I’m so accustomed to traveling an hour for groceries, hair appointments, recitals, everything, and I know most people aren’t.

Orrrrrr perhaps they’re calling Trinity applicants before Pratt applicants…? See, now I’m reaching, haha.

Submitted my common app at 7:22 (birthday time, I’m rather superstitious haha) Saturday night.

I submitted my supplement the 19th to get priority for an interview, and I got a call about a week later. Todays my interview… kinda nervous!

Am i the only person who hasn’t gotten an interview?! )’:

I submitted my Common App at 11:11 pm :D

For those who have done an interview, did you guys bring anything to the interview? And how was the interview?

Are all Early Decision students required for an interview?
Also, if you turned in your application after the priority interview deadline of Oct. 19th, does that mean you will not be considered for an interview even if you live very close to the campus?

@Haneom94 - I don’t believe an interview is REQUIRED. The October 19th date was a “priority” interview date, meaning those students would be the first considered. See the quote below.

@topstardog - this is what I received in an e-mail today regarding my son’s app and interviews:

"INTERVIEWS
· If you submitted your Early Decision application by our October 19 priority deadline for interviews, you should hear from an alumni interviewer by November 9. If you applied by October 19 but have not heard by November 9, you may complete the interview request form after Monday on our website: [Checklist & Deadlines - Duke Admissions](<a href=“Apply - Duke Undergraduate Admissions”>Apply - Duke Undergraduate Admissions)

· Unfortunately, we don’t have alumni interviewers everywhere. In the event that you are not offered an interview, you are welcome to submit an additional letter of recommendation in place of the interview by November 21 by fax to 919-668-1661 or by email to undergrad-admissions@duke.edu. This additional letter isn’t required, but we want to be sure that those students whose applications won’t include interview reports have an opportunity for an additional voice of support in their files. Again, your chances of admission won’t be affected in any way if you don’t have an interview, nor will they be affected if you choose not to send an extra recommendation."

@Pinkie12 - my son did not bring anything to his interview, as I have been in contact with a parent here on CC whose wife does interviews for Duke and she said she’s never had an applicant bring a resume (a resume is what I had specifically asked him about). My son tried to brainstorm a few questions he could ask about the interviewer, as well as about the interviewers experience at Duke. He also prepared himself to answer “tough” questions, like what is a challenge you have had to overcome? I also heard, and this may be obvious, to send a thank you e-mail to your interviewer. A formal thank you note is not necessary, but just an e-mail saying you appreciate their time is nice.

@my3gr8boyz -Thanks for the great sum up of your son’s interview.
I have my interview on Monday (11/12). Any additional tips and suggestions would be welcome.

On the student online portal, does anyone else’s early decision agreement say incomplete? My father and I both signed it :/

My D had her interview Tuesday evening. She was not nervous going in, and had the attitude that it was her opportunity to gather info about Duke. (Her interviewer was a lovely woman in her mid 20s.) At first, the interviewer may have been a bit taken aback by my D’s approach, but soon adapted and allowed my daughter to interview her. (Maybe this is a slight exaggeration, but not much!) My daughter had all of her questions answered, such as the importance of greek life, club/intramural sports, Focus, DukeEngage, etc. Additionally, the interviewer learned quite a bit about my D, such as travels, internships, interests, and of course “Why Duke?”. The interview lasted 45 minutes, and I believe both parties were satisfied and suitably impressed.

My advice? Ask questions, as it shows your interest and enthusiasm for Duke. Be yourself, it is all right to be curious, animated, or humorous, as it lets the interviewer see you as a person. My husband (who interviews for one of “the holy trinity” ivy schools) assured my daughter that an interviewer knows very little about you other than the fact you have applied to the school! Good luck to all.

@Eggo - Our ED agreement said that same thing until the counselor finally submitted her part. Apparently, she couldn’t submit it until the whole Common App was done and sent by my son, which he did the day of Hurricane Sandy (1/2 hour before we lost internet for days!!) on October 29th. He didn’t get back to school til the 5th of November. She submitted on the 7th, and the portal changed pretty quickly after that.

All components of my application are now complete including first quarter grades and the interview. Now the long wait…
