Duke Math

I'm currently a Duke pfrosh and I had a couple questions about the math department. I took Calc last year (not an AP class but we got through the AP material) and I got an A, I'll admit I didn't really know what was going on until I really studied the day before a test, but I go to a hard school and got better grades than the rest of the class, so I must have known what was going on. I hard that the classes at Duke are really hard however, especially the intro to Math ones. I took the ACT and got somewhere between a 32-34 in Math (I honestly forget) and took the SAT IIs in math and got a 730 in Math I and then a 700 and 670 in Math II.

I think I want to major in econ, so I will have to take math, but can anyone help me out by telling me which class I should take first when it comes to math? I looked at the syllabuses but they all do look pretty similar for Math 105L(25L), Math 106L(26L), and Math 111L(31L).

Thanks so much!

I have no idea how to answer your question, since I’m also a pfrosh, but I just found your post funny and relatable. I’m in AP Calc AB and somehow I have an A. Seriously, I have an idea what is going on about 30% of the time. Same exact thing for AP Physics B. Several weeks AFTER we have a test, though, everything becomes impeccably clear!

I would recommend 31L. Passing out and taking as few math courses at Duke is a good thing. Math at Duke is a LOT more difficult than high school; people who get 5s on Calc BC and seem like rockstars in high school often fare average in Duke math courses. So, taking 31, 32, and 102 (or 103) seems like the best plan rather than taking 25, 26, 41, 102. Although 25 and 26 might be easier than 31, I’d say if you feel reasonably prepared, it’s best to skip them. If you feel that you’re weak in math (not saying you said that), then probably economics is not a good choice in a major, to put it bluntly. Best to give it a shot and see how it goes, though. Here are the econ requirements for the BS degree:
