Sokkermom - Your son doesn't happen to be on 4th floor does he? It starts seeming like a rather small world on these message boards. Maybe your son is my son's roomate and we actual know each other!!! ;) Now wouldn't that be something. LOL

dak-

He's on the 3rd floor. I'm sure they have at least seen each other!

Thanks for the info. Actually, my son is rooming with a friend, so they are already coordinating who will bring what items. As I stated on an earlier post, my son was accepted ED and just recently found out that one of his best friends, who lives across the street was accepted to Duke. Our high school has never sent two students to Duke before and they live on the same street! The guidance counselor was so thrilled. I don't know if his parents are that excited, because he turned down a big scholarship from Georgia Tech. I think my son was very persuasive! His friend is attending Pratt and his parents thought that Georgia Tech would be better, but I think that Pratt sounds awesome. I don't think that they will be dissappointed. Also, if he decided engineering is not for him at least he would have other options. CJ

Sokkermom - WOW, was I ever in la-la land. I was thinking of my middle son when I said he was on fourth floor....Randolph doesn't even have four floors (I knew my Duke son was on the top floor)! Which means my son also is on third floor (my fifty year old brain forgot!) - now I KNOW they would know each other. I was going to PM you so I didn't bore everyone else here, but I don't think you are enabled to receive private messages.

My son will be attending Pratt starting 2005 and I'm just starting to think about the practical aspects of what he needs for his dorm, how to get it there (we are in California so will not be driving to Duke), etc. How do most folks who come from that far away deal with equipping their dorm room? Also, do you recommend that parents make the trip to Duke to get everything setup (this seems like what most parents do).

buy most stuff in Durham - they do have a walmart.

I want to know why the KKK is burning crosses is Durham. I know Duke Isn't responsible, but they need to take a stance on it, since it's happening in their backyard!

Poor old South...can't seem to escape the ignorance!

Duexenfants,

Don't panic, you willnot have to drag stuff across country. First of all the Atlantic Center mall is a quick 6 minute drive from Pratt (around the COrner from the Brooklyn Academy of Music) There you can find Target, Old Navy Burlington Coat factory. Down town Brooklyn you will find Macys and a bunch of other shopping.

My opinion you should just hop on the #4 train and go to Century 21 (Cortland and Church street- directly across from ground zero) because you will get some of the best discounted shopping in the city.
Once you hit manhattan you will you willhave so many choices to shop your head will spin.

sybbie719--You may have misunderstood deuxenfants question. Her S is going to be in Pratt School of Engineering at Duke, not Pratt Institute in Manhattan!

deuxenfants--it would be a good idea to come with your S and go to the orientation programs for the Duke parents. We will be doing that, not only to help our S move in (also starting Pratt!) but to have a chance to hear what the school has to say to us about a variety of things. We did the same when we took our D to orientation--found it very helpful.

Duke has great info in the Student Union Info center with cards that have little maps to the Kmart, Walmart, Costco, etc. It is easier/cheaper to get essentials when you arrive, than to go to the expense and hassle of shipping from a distance!!
