future duke mom

My son was just accepted early decision and I would like to talk to other parents in the same wonderful situation. We live in Florida, so maybe some future carpool links? Or just to talk about Duke, my favorite subject!

Candace,

Congratulations! Son is a freshman there, and so far so good.......
(Not from Florida though.)

Candance,

Welcome to the board and cngratulations on your son's ED acceptance.

thanks! Sokker mom, do you love Duke? How are the dorms? Will my son need lots of winter clothes? Thanks for your answers. My son is a Florida by, so he will be cold!

Candace,

Believe it or not my son has actually been very warm. We are from New England! He has not needed anything but a light jacket or sweatshirt so far. He was happy to see that we have snow here!

I think he is pretty happy there. However, the dorm room is the smallest double room we have ever seen. He is in one of the dorms with air conditioning so the rooms are smaller. He is hoping to get a bigger room next year! They actually lofted their beds, and that gave them a little more space.

The freshman meal plan is a little tough for a guy that eats a lot. He ran out of "food points" toward the end of the semester, so we had to "replenish" the food fund. He has been home for a week and is used to eating constantly. I think the meal plans are different for upperclassmen.

Candace,

I just re-read my note above. I really did not want to sound negative at all. On the other hand, I do not want to be accused of being a Duke troll. LOL

My son did mention that he could not picture himself anywhere else! He really is excited and proud to be a student there. He has met some good friends from around the country (roommate is from CA), has taken some interesting classes, has been exposed to lots of new social opportunities, etc.

Contrary to some opinions, he also found out that Duke does not have significant grade inflation! (I think that is a good thing, so that he doesn't think that he can coast...)

Thanks, sokkermom! My son is also a big eater, so I guess we might have to add points too, oh well! My son is kind of spoiled, but he will manage with a small room. He has never really had to study before, but he will learn if he wants to make good grades. I am glad that he will not need too much warm clothing. But I guess he might need a ski jacket for January when it might be cooler. Thanks again!

Are there any other future or current Duke moms out there? I would love to hear tips on what is needed in a dorm room. Can you request air or non-air conditioned rooms? My son would prefer more space without air. Also he would not like a triple at all. I hope that is not just given out. I can't wait till August, but I will miss him! But I still have a younger daughter at home.
Thanks for replies

I am looking for info on Duke from current and future Duke moms. All info is appreciated. I am new at this college stuff! Happy New Year!!! CJ

I am a Duke student but I can give you information. They give you a survey to fill out to decide whether you want A/C or not, and if you want roommmates. For the dorm room, I'm pretty sure you can google a good list. Don't bring a printer, because printing is free, and I think food points are inferior to cash because you can only use them at certain places and they don't refund them to you at the end of the year.

Thanks Amused! My son is having fun meeting kids on the accepted list website. What a great idea!
