Duke Optional Essay

I'm pretty sure this was mentioned sometime in the past, but is the sole purpose of submitting the extra essay to give Duke a sense of the person's character? I understand that it does not affect admissions but I was just wondering how many of you Duke students were admitted without submitting the extra essay. Thanks in advance for any insight.

What is the question? It might be something new since I applied 4 years ago, but all I did was the Why Duke question and the standard essay.

(For Arts and Sciences Applicants Only) If you are applying to Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, please discuss why you consider Duke a good match for you. Is there something in particular at Duke that attracts you? Please limit your response to one or two paragraphs.

so yea...it's prob. the why duke essay...any thoughts?

yea this is their standard essay and it is meant to give greater insight into the applicants character. Although it is not required, the essay is actually very helpful to you. It allows you to explore the school more and give the concrete reasons u want to be at duke not only to the adcoms but to yourself as well. this was my best essay i think last year, and after doing it i had more confidence in myself/application. just be yourself in it and you'll do great

thanks nmehta...anyone else want to share?
