duke or cornell or jhu?

which school is better for bio and maybe premed? i'm in a predicament here!! hows campus life? and which school is easier to get a better grade in?

easiest to get a grade in....thats easy...Duke

next....Cornell/JHU

haha, I'm facing the exact same thing. I got in jhu/cornell/duke/penn. For now, I'm thinking Duke, then Cornell. JHU is giving me the best financial aid but premed there I've heard is really cutthroat.

fwiw, Cornell is an ivy

That's not worth as much as you think. :p For all intents and purposes, Duke = Cornell = JHU when it comes to prestige.

lookieme - The premed competition will be most cutthroat at JHU, but it is by no means easy at Duke or Cornell. If GPA is your biggest concern, I would go to Duke, but still acknowledge that you are going to have to work your tail off to come out ahead of the pre-med pack.

banana, I think you're selling us a little bit short when it comes to prestige! =)

I'm teasing. All of these schools are really wonderful for premedical students - great opportunities, etc.

I will raise one point, and that's that Cornell's medical school is very far away from its undergraduate campus. At least in my premed path, having access to the hospital (for volunteering, research projects, etc.) is very important.

or you can do those of us who were waitlisted a favor and go to Cornell or JHU.

lol. i'll see. thanks guys. any experience with the advising?

"fwiw, Cornell is an ivy"

Yes, it's lucky enough to be in the Northeast and part of a certain football conference. That contributes nothing to how good of a school it is. I personally consider JHU and Duke superior

Duke's academic advising is on the mediocre side of things - but our career advising is really wonderful.

Investigate these aspects at JHU and Cornell very carefully, as their reputations - I have no personal experience, so this is not a statement - is that they expect much more independent searching on your part.

Here at Duke, our advising team is brilliant: we have several databases for finding internships, employers come here routinely to recruit in massive "career fairs", we have resume and cover letter workshops, and our pre-professional-school advising is incredible (prelaw, premed, etc.) They're absolutely reputed to be the best in the business, and with good reason.

i'm having the same problem, except i'm between JHU and Duke. JHU offered me a wonderful finaid package, taking care of everything since there was no way I would be able to pay for it. I know JHU is recognized with medicine so I'm confused, but it will just depend on Duke's finaid package. I don't want loans, so if Duke gives me loans, I have to go to JHU. What's your take?

I'm a physician, Cornell alum, (bio major and premed) and my daughter goes to Duke. I would definitely choose one of these two over Hopkins (that's the easy decision). Not that Hopkins is bad but one of my close friends in med school was premed there and he indeed did confirm the"cutthroat" rumors back then. I don't think it's changed that much. There are a huge number of premeds at JHU considering the size of the school.

The Bio dept at Cornell has always been amazing with huge resources (remember there is an Ag and Life sciences college and a vet school as well). It is one of the largest departments in the University. The professors in my bio courses were incredible... many of them authors of the definitive textbook in their fields. Cornell however is known for having some degree of grade deflation. I am not saying premed will be a breeze at Duke, as my D's friends who are premed are working their tails off. But, I do know that to maintain a 3.6 or higher GPA as a Cornell premed is extremely difficult. If you do it you will have a very good chance of getting in to med school, but that's also true at Duke. I have heard also that Duke's preprofessional guidance is amazing, and their stats do show a phenomenally high rate of acceptance into Med and Law schools. You should probably take a look at those stats.

Forget the prestige thing... the Ivy League label doesn't mean that much anymore. Especially when you are talking about Duke! As far as the social life, based on the year my D has had, I would probably choose Duke.... There's definitely an abundance of social activity at Cornell as well, and I had a great time there, but I think Duke might have the edge. If you like ice hockey and freezing weather better than warm weather and basketball, well then that might influence the decision as well. The bottom line is that you are in a great position, and you can't go wrong with either school!
Good Luck!!

Go to Duke. My sister is in Duke majoring in Bio. But she says its really tough to get good grades.

It varies a great deal from person to person and class to class. On balance, I believe Duke's grading is probably in the middle amongst what are commonly considered our "peer" institutions.

duke, then cornell, then jhu

Duke prepares students for pre-med without the cutthroat atmosphere at Hopkins. I think Duke will offer you a much better college experience than Johns Hopkins. I don't know much about Cornell, but all of the sciences here at Duke are outstanding. The French Science Center (a la Melinda French Gates - Bill Gates' wife) is going to open this year, and it looks amazing. In addition, we have the largest interdisciplinary science facility in the country (Levine Science Research Center) and the new engineering bldg, CIEMAS (Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Engineering, Medicine, and Applied Sciences). Both are amazing and are tracking many extremely respected professors from around the country. We, of course, have had a new library, a new dorm, and an art museum open up this year.
