If I want to study IR or econ in college
do you think that Duke would be a nice fit?
I heard it is a great school with many strong departments
but I also heard it is a pretty research oriented school
What do you guys think?

Duke doesn’t have an international relations department. However, the Public Policy department is considered one of the top 15 in the nation, with the Sanford School ranks in the top 10 in the nation at the graduate level. Economics is the most popular major at Duke and a great way to get into finance, banking, etc. The recruitment at Duke is very strong and Duke is represented quite well on Wall Street from the top firms.

However, for churning PhD economic students, Duke econ isn’t as well known as say, UChicago and the like. (Although I know two econ students getting PhDs now at Stanford and UPenn, so it’s still doable). Duke economics is not as highly ranked as some others for this reason. Although it still teaches a similar curriculum based on theory, it seems that most Duke economics majors are interested in working in finance, banking, and business (often getting an MBA later) rather than pursuing advanced degrees in economics. So, it might be a good fit for you, or might not. Double majoring is quite common at Duke as well and you could easily do Pub Pol/Econ as there’s some overlap in the requirements.
