Duke student(s) taking questions

Thanks for these responses guys, they’re really helpful!
I just had some other questions that would help me with my bookbagging and making potential schedules-

  1. I want to take Spanish 105 and CCS 150 (cross listed as Pubpol 124) and they both only have 4 spots open. I have the first registration window, yet I’m not sure if I’ll get lucky and be one of the first of 600 freshmen with the first window- so do you think that it’d be possible that I would get in?
  2. I don’t know how fast writing 20 classes fill up (especially if they’re popular) so would it be possible that I will not get into the writing 20 I want, despite logging on at 12:00 pm?
    Thanks!

bluedevil13 thank you!

BallerDuke-
The classes that fill up quickly are the ones that all freshmen want/need to take. Basically: the popular Writing 20s and freshmen seminars may be gone within minutes. It’s probably a good idea to have a backup or two in your bookbag just in case. As I said, this generally only applies to the really popular subjects/professors that everyone wants (Prof. Wilhite comes to mind).

As for those other two classes, it’s difficult to say whether you’ll be able to get them or not. Although there are only 4 spots left in each, you have as good a shot as anyone to get in. Not many freshmen take Spanish 105 (most who place into 100-level probably want to major/minor so they take 101 instead…or they just don’t know how much easier 105 is). A few of my friends took CCS first semester freshman year so that’s entirely possible too. Again, probably a good idea to have some backups so that you’re not stressed after your window opens.

To give yourself the best possible chance to get into those classes, be sure you’re on ACES before 12:00pm. You literally should have a webpage with the official US time and hit that “Click to Enroll” button at the bottom of the bookbag at 12:00pm on the dot. If you can, get the fastest internet connection possible (ethernet rather than wifi) and make sure you are using Firefox or another stable browser (Safari crashed as I was trying to enroll and it was the most stressful few minutes ever). Also, don’t hit the back button or anything after you click to enroll; it’ll put you at the back of the queue. I know this all may seem very crazy/OCD, but it really does help haha.

^ Second the above and I’ll just add that make sure to only click button ONCE. Click it well, click it on time, and click it only once. If you click it multiple times, you will be bumped to the back of the queue of server requests. So, even if it looks like it’s taking forever to load or it’s not doing anything, if that loading bar (in the case of firefox) is running in the status bar at the bottom of the window then you should just wait it out. This was something I learned after a couple semesters and has never failed me.

SBR thanks for the tips. Could you have a look at my schedule and give me your opinion? It is a few post back. Thank you so much. I am in the middle of exams and I’m worried oh just about everything right now. Thanks.

what does duke do with the summer reading when we get on campus? also, are we graded somehow?

Later this summer (probably late July/early August), you’ll be assigned a FAC (First-Year Advisory Counselor) who will act as a guide and peer mentor through orientation and your entire freshman year. During orientation, you’ll be discussing the summer reading with your small FAC group as your “first shared intellectual experience” at Duke. I think the author is also coming to speak to you guys, which was pretty awesome last year. The whole thing is very casual and relaxed. It’s basically just a way to get to know some fellow dormmates while discussing the book. No grades, assignments, or anything.

Do read it though. It’ll make moderating the discussions much easier for FACs like me :)

Okay. Awesome, thanks!

BlueDevil13- What are the really popular freshman seminars? Also, where can I find a list of freshman seminars. On the Duke website, they only have the seminars for the spring of 2010

About how long does it take a bus running the regular C-1 route on a weekday afternoon to get from the main East Campus stop (between Aycock and Jarvis) to the main West Campus stop (in front of the Chapel)?

Thanks

kraines, allard, bouvrie, chen, li, Espinosa, Joshi

of the above, which math teacher is most recommmended for math 103?

anyone recommend evanth 93 D with glander for 1st semester? it sounds interesting. is it supposed to be really difficult and is the professor good/bad?

im already taking chem 31, hindi I, dance 84, and a seminar.thanks!

Have any of you guys had class with Mike Posner?

Random question but when do most people plan to actually get to NC? Do a lot of people get there a day or two early or do most try to book their arrivals exactly on the day we’re supposed to move in?

It’s generally advisable to get there the day before. Given that the line of cars waiting to get on east during the moving time usually stretch a block or more down main street in either direction, you’ll want to make sure you arrive early. I’m sure you can probably make it on the day of but it can get a bit insane.

@jko0426:
To find a list of the freshman seminars, go to “Advanced Search” under the Registration tab in ACES. For course number, select “is exactly” from the dropdown and then type “49S” into the box. Search and that should give you all the seminars offered this fall. As for the popular ones, they change from year to year, but I recall one of the History ones and maybe the the Culanth one about music going pretty quickly. Seminars tend to fill up less quickly than Writing 20, so have a couple options and you should be okay. Also keep in mind that ANY class with an “S” after the course number satisfies the freshman seminar requirement, and there are plenty of interesting 20S seminars out there (freshman and sophomores only).

Around 8 minutes. Be sure you’re also allotting time for getting on a bus, as sometimes it’ll take 1 or 2 tries depending on how busy it is. I would say 1pm is probably the busiest time of the afternoon.

Mike Posner is a Huge tool
he was cool as a freshman, then he thought it would be sick to play smoke and drive 3 times in a single show. And then he got terrible and annoying… then he got cocky and now I can’t stand hearing it on the radio

other than that, I hear he’s ok?

edit: maybe drug dealer girl, i dont even remember

Seriously? I never knew he went to Duke. Pretty cool if you ask me.

No it really was cool, like when he performed at LDOC. After he signed with J records and took advantage of Purple, a community service organization, he kinda created a bad image for himself.
