Rising Duke Junior -- Ask me anything!

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted to Duke’s class of 2023!

If you have any questions about life at Duke – the social scene, classes, support networks, pre-professional studies, Greek life and SLGs, Durham itself-- comment below! Good luck with next year. I can’t wait to read your questions.

My twins dream school! They are HS Junior and Duke is their #1Choice

What is your opinion on the Duke Focus Program? (Pros and Cons).

Do you know of any transfers? I am hoping to leave Berkeley and go to a school with smaller classes but good academics …

Do the basketball players really go to class?

@Empireapple My friend currently at Duke did occasionally see Zion Williamson go to class.

Are you in a STEM major? If so, what is your opinion of the instructors? I am most interested in whether or not the classes are taught by the professors, rather than grad students, and what kind of access you have/had to them. Are you able to build close relationships with the profs? Are the profs dedicated to teaching undergrads, or are they more focused on their research?

Also, one criticism I have heard about Duke is that the school employs a lot of foreign professors and that the language barrier - or more appropriately, the accent barrier, can be a detriment to understanding the subject material. I’ve read numerous comments of mixed opinions and would appreciate your thoughts as an active student who has been there more than a couple of years.

Note that the original poster has not been online since May 4th. It’s not clear when you will get a response, if ever.

^ The first reply was a week and a half after the OP. I guess they gave up on any getting any responses.

@Anisqoyo Duke has a FLUNCH program where each undergrad gets $70 a semester to invite professors out for lunch. It’s really easy to build close relationships with professors from what I’ve heard. It’s not uncommon for freshmen to ask their professors for TA/research lab positions.

I’m not that familiar with exactly how many grad students teach or how many foreign professors are there. Maybe you can ask that on a separate thread (I know lots of current students are active on Reddit).
