Duke vs. Cornell

(X-posted to Cornell as well)

Hi!

So I was recently admitted to both of these colleges and I was hoping for some opinions on what I should pick. I'm interested in Physics/Astronomy and will definitely be going to grad. school after. I will be visiting both for the first time next month.

Has anyone faced this decision in the past?

My major case for Cornell is that it's amazing in Physics/Astronomy (and much better than Duke). My case for Duke is that it has a smaller class size and I prefer that.

Regardless, I would still like to get some general opinions. Anyone?

I sent you a PM! Good luck with your decision.

Duke is definitely on the small side for physics. My friend who was a physics major was one of like 5 in his year. So it’s a small but tight-knit group. If you don’t like being so isolated academically though, Duke may not be the best place.

I was also choosing between Duke and Cornell last year but between Cornell’s AEM program and Econ here at Duke. In your case, I think academically Duke and Cornell will be very similar. SBR does make a good point that Duke has a very small and tight-knit physics program which is advantageous.

I made my decision based on my visit to both and Duke just seemed like the right place. There’s a lot more school spirit and the weather is beautiful. I would just wait for your visit to make your decision because one of them will speak to you more and make you feel more at home.

Until your visit, talk to any current students or alumni you know from your school or area that went to these schools and do more research about the academic program, but the visit will most likely make your decision.
