Duke vs. Cornell

I am interested in engineering. I visited Cornell and really liked it, but I'd like to see what Duke has to offer, whether it has any advantages over Cornell. I'll be visiting Duke this coming weekend.

Can you guys please give me some pros and cons of each?

Thanks a lot, CC. You're the greatest, hugs and kisses, etc.

Duke has kind of a weak engineering reputation (except biomedical engineering), compared to Cornell.

ye from what iv'e hard Cornell engineering > DUke engineering

hmmmmm.....I was choosing between cornell and duke last year (not engineering). I love Duke's bball team and it was a main attraction for me. Plus, Duke was really social and their academics are obviously impressive, however Cornell is also very good both socially and academically. But, when I visited Cornell, I instantly felt that the campus was 'clicking' with me and i would feel comfortable going there. Besides, my parents didn't want to pay 50k a year for duke since they didn't know that duke was a good school. So, for me, I picked the school based on my 'gut' feelings and my parents' suggestions. lol.

But, since Cornell's engineering is a notch up above Duke's, I would recommend Cornell. Definitely visit both schools and see what campus 'feel' and social atmosphere u like better. Plus, see how much aid each school gives you. GL.

Thanks you guys. Any more opinions?

This is exactly the same decision I have to make!

If I go to Duke I'll probably end up in biomedical engineering and I don't want to be "boxed in" to a certain major, per se. However, biomed is an area that I'm really interested in.

Cornell will give more of a chance to explore different areas, although I'll probably be leaning towards EE/EECS or maybe chem engineering there.

My third choice is Berkeley. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this school and I still don't know if I would go there.

More input! I need to choose between Duke and Cornell engineering too!

Wow, we are really similar, swuster, but I didn't apply to Berkeley and I would probably do materials science instead of chem engineering.

^ Berkeley's chemical engineering is a top-rated program. Also, Berkeley just got $500 million from BP (shared with UIUC) to develop alternative biofuels.

Berkeley has a lot going for it.

For Engineering it's a clear choice: Cornell.

The only area of engineering where Duke surpasses Cornell is biomedical. Otherwise, go to Cornell for Engineering for academic quality, diversity of courses, research opportunities.

I'm really leaning towards Cornell at this point.

Anything to sway me over to duke? How are the schools' reputations for a joh/grad school?

bumpety bump bump

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...

If you are sure on engineering, go to Cornell.

Any more opinions?

btw, I'm at Duke right now.

For engineering, it's a no-brainer.

i say duke (ok maybe my username gives away my bias) because not only will you receive an engineering degree that is pretty much on par with cornell but you'll find the social scene is much more exciting at duke than at cornell imo. i mean hopefully you won't be studying 24/7 in college. the atmosphere at duke is incredible, trust me you'd love it.

Duke > Cornell good choice

Cornell over Duke. C'mon Dukies, you know that your engineering program is not one of your strongest areas.

Cornell over Duke any day. Beautiful campus, top notch education, a bit difficult - but hey, its college.
