Duke vs cornell

which ones better for placing people in investment banking ? (majoring in math and finance)

Fairly equal from my understanding. I don’t think one name or the other will give you a significant advantage.

Yeah, they’re fairly equal but I believe that Cornell has a slight edge over Duke when it comes to recruiting.

I think it varies from firm to firm…

I say Duke. Duke’s business is ranked among the top 20 (or 10 i forgot).
But Cornell is also a famous IVY, so yeah. :)

Cornell’s undergraduate business program has been ranked number 10 in the most recent USNews Rankings, while Duke isn’t in the top 10. USNews rankings aren’t really that important though and neither is Cornell’s status as an Ivy League institution, which has no effect on its academic standing. For IB it would seem that the two are a pretty even split.

Duke does not have an undergraduate business program, so it is impossible for it to be ranked in anything.

If you are talking about Duke’s MBA program (Fuqua), then Cornell’s MBA program is only ranked 3 spots behind in Businessweek (Duke: 8; Cornell: 11) while US News Finds Duke 4 spots ahead (Duke: 14; Cornell 18-- on a side note I’d just like to remark how ridiculous these rankings are, I’m just posting the information so the OP is not misinformed).

Regardless, graduate school rankings have nothing to do with undergraduate recruitment.

I would personally choose Cornell. It is closer in proximity to NYC (which can be a much bigger factor than you think), has a much larger population which means it garners recruitment from a much bigger base of banks, and has done especially well in the past few years (along with Dartmouth).

Both are great schools. I know for a fact that Cornell students are highly recruited. I suspect Duke students are as well, but I do not know this as fact.

I can attest to Duke’s strength in IB. Both are strong, I would say Duke has a slight edge. In the end though both will get you there, so its completely a fit issue.

i’d say duke by a small margin

Duke by a small margin. Duke is usually considered to be on par with Yale, Dartmouth, and Columbia. Cornell is more on the level of Northwestern and UChicago. However, in this case, the margin is small enough that you should just choose the school you like more.

Agree with IvyPBear

Did you get into AEM? If you did AEM would be much better than Duke for IB. However, if you didn’t I would choose based on fit.

Debatable.

It is important to note that the economy is a global one. No longer limited to NYC. For international or global reputation I would take Cornell over Duke. Both institution are great especially in the US but Cornell will command much respect outside of the US. More and more deals are done overseas now a day. The power and money are slowly moving from West to East.

Do you have any proof that Cornell has more of a “global pull” than Duke?
