DUKE vs. DARTMOUTH??

I posted this in another forum and decided that I would now post it here so that I would get a totally unbiased view from the Dukies. All comments welcome. Thanks!

What makes you think you would get an unbiased view here?

Fairly similar schools in regards to the social scenes actually. Although Dartmouth's campus is a lot more isolated. Both have pretty strong Greek scenes and have good academic/life balance. Personal preference really. Dartmouth is a lot colder though ;) Dartmouth and Penn are probably the "party" Ivies, and most similar to Duke. Dartmouth's student body is a bit more conservative than Duke, and a bit more preppy (and Duke is plenty preppy already). Dartmouth is like 50% smaller and their grad student body size is about 1/4 of Duke's. Dartmouth is almost like a liberal arts school if you ask me. One is not clearly better than the other, so you're just going to have to decide for yourself based on your interests, impressions, etc. Duke's sports scene is obviously much larger too.

the tipping point is basketball. go w/ duke

I would actually say Dartmouth is more liberal than Duke, not the other way around.

This seems to be a common decision for a lot of Duke students. I would say that, of my friends, the two most commonly turned down schools for Duke are Dartmouth and Cornell. I'm sure a lot of people at Dartmouth turned Duke down, too.

I think they're very similar as stated above. Visit both if you can and decided for yourself. Otherwise I would also say that basketball is the tipping point :)

If you like freezing your *** off, then go to Dartmouth. Otherwise, Duke is the way to go.

I envy your situation right now. My mom keeps asking me well which school would be better if you got into both: A or B. I just keep telling her what an awesome decision that would be.

You can't go wrong either way. Dartmouth is a lot more outdoorsy, close-knit community, smaller, more liberal artsy. Duke is warmer, better athletics, bigger, closer to a metropolitan area (even if it is Durham). Both have GREAT recognition nationally. It also depends on your area of interest. For me, it would have to be Dartmouth for skiing. I love skiing and to be able to ski every week would be unmatched at Duke where it rarely snows. Personal preference, couldn't go wrong either way. good luck

I'll give some benefits of Dartmouth since I'm sure other people can/have cover the benefits of Duke

Dartmouth is one of the best ivy leagues in terms of their treatment and emphasis on the importance of undergrads. It is also in a small town, but the town is more or less catered to Dartmouth students. Another benefit is being on the quarter system, which allows students to compete better in competitive internships (allows for them to apply when semester schools still in school, easier to take off a quarter than a semester, etc).

Both have beautiful campuses.

You really can't go wrong. But since this is a Duke forum, I'd recommend coming here

Thanks everyone!
Retic: the unbiased comment was sarcastic

Here is the match:
http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2006/09/17/weekinreview/20060917_LEONHARDT_CHART.html

According to this chart. 70% of students accepted to Duke and Dartmouth chose Dartmouth. I'm very surprised at the wide gap

That study in that chart during the lacrosse scandal year at Duke so I'm sure that had something to do with it.

I think the data on that chart is from the late '90s. A more current study by Duke admissions says they lose most cross-admits to HYP, about 60% to Brown, split with Dartmouth, Penn and Columbia and win over Cornell.

mascot: Blue devils > Big green

though dartmouth's unofficial mascot keggy the keg gives duke a run for their money

^That is the STUPIDEST list I have ever seen in my life. There is no credibility to those statements whatsover as you get your info from "Campus Dirt" and "the U" lol.

CLUBS- Duke and Dartmouth both have an amazing array of EC and club involvement opportunities available for its students. In both of these schools, kids who participate in clubs are actually passionate about these organizations/causes unlike in HS when students were just trying to build resumes. This shouldn't really be a factor when it comes to anyone's college decision making.

FOOD-I can't speak for Dartmouth's on-campus food but Duke has an incredible amount of dining options on campus and there is a great amount of variety/ethnic diversity. Off-campus, Dartmouth CANNOT EVEN BEGIN to compete with Duke with regards to food since Duke is located within an actual city(no town) and students have access to Ninth Street and Brightleaf Square(both filled with excellent restaurants. My friend went to debate camp in Dartmouth and he literally said there were like 2 restaurants TOTAL in that tiny village that the school is located in.

GREEK LIFE-"Dartmouth has better parties" HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA OK. The Greek system is arguably bigger and much frattier at Duke. Like 2/3 of Duke girls join sororities and about half of Duke guys join frats. Duke also has many many more athletes which definitely adds more "coolness" and frattiness to the social and partying culture. There are also a lot of themed parties as well thrown by fraternities and formals that students in frats/sororities go to. Dartmouth's social life consists of kids going down in to the basement of a frat and playing Pong all night long. Sorry, that does not constitute a social life.

PROFESSORS-Again...a moot point. Both schools have great undergraduate focus and the professors are extremely knowledgeable and accomplished at both schools. What does it exactly mean for "lectures to be more applicable"?

SOCIAL LIFE-"Duke kids are druggies" HAHAHAHAHA you're retarded. Most kids here don't even smoke pot or hookah. I really can't speak for Dartmouth but this claim is ridiculous. Also, I have never been to Dartmouth so its hard for me to compare the drinking culture. Duke kids drink A LOT. Most of my friends drink from Wednesday to Saturday. Do Dartmouth kids drink more than that? I seriously doubt it. Duke kids hookup A LOT. There's not really a way you can tell which school has more hookups unless you've spent a considerable amount of time at both schools. Both schools have a large hookup culture. I'm not even sure that's a good thing lol.

Drinking is like all Dartmouth kids can do. Duke students can go clubbing/eat out at restaurants/go to concerts/watch movies/etc. either in Durham or Chapel Hill. Duke clearly has a better social life since it caters to all types of students and just has more options and variety. Kids don't have to be binge drinkers to have fun, although a sizeable amount at Duke choose to anyway.

GIRLS-I'm like 100% sure Duke has more attrative girls. There's no way a Northeast Ivy school can have hotter girls than a southern school. All the chicks at Dartmouth must be wearing like 15 layers all the time and no one looks hot with a puffy coat and a scarf on. Duke girls actually dress up when they go out unlike at Dartmouth where I heard girls just wore regular shirts and pants. Warm weather does wonders for the attractiveness of the female population. Girls always look hotter with a sexy top or a dress than regular Ts and jeans.;)

GUYS-I'm not gay so I can't comment. The Duke ladies on CC can feel free to elaborate.

GETTING IN-Duke and Dartmouth are virtually equally selective.

SAFETY-Yeah Dartmouth wins. SWEET you guys are safe...oh wait there's nothing to do in Hanover. The only way you can hurt yourself is by screwing up a keg stand!

STUDENTS-"Southern hospitality" is prevalent here and everyone is really friendly and laid-back. I'm pretty sure Duke kids are less cutthroat than Ivy League kids. The warm weather makes us happier.:)

WORKLOAD-If Duke is harder, then Duke kids are motivated to learn more right?

I have a great amount of respect for Duke and Dartmouth. Not so much for your ignorant statements however.

Wow.... EAD, you're credibility just went from little to nonexistent. At least the other guy was decent enough to credit the places where he got the points from. He wasn't even agreeing with all of them, just making his own critical views in conjunction with those held by these websites. You on the other hand, are obviously making completely blanket statements that probably hurts Duke's reputation more so than they help. (Many of which, I disagree with very much) Just goes to show you the type of students/people Duke and Dartmouth produce.

That's all I'm going to say.

Are you making a gross generalization as to the type of students Duke produces based off EAD's comments?

No. (10 Chars)

Good.
