Posted this in the Rice forum as well. I already submitted my deposit to Rice.
I know there's a ton of threads on this subject but I just got off the waitlist for Duke Pratt. I'm planning on doing mechanical engineering, but I'm also considering the possibility of doing economics (math econ analysis at Rice), with the thought of going into banking or possibly working with some of the energy corporations if I stay in Texas. Both schools are equal academically, I'd give the edge in engineering to Rice, but Duke has that "national prestige" that I think would be advantageous in landing a job in a competetive job market like banking and the financial sector. I know Duke is a target, but does Rice have a similar presence in this area as I know their social sciences departments are great but how do they compare to Duke? Right now I'm about 70 % staying with Rice, 30% going to Duke. Cost is not a big factor, although I do like the fact that Rice is a bit less. Convince me to stay with Rice!

Well, you posted in the wrong forum if you want to be convinced to stay with Rice! ;) Don't worry about your decision. Rice engineering is very strong and has a stronger presence in TX if that's where you want to stay. Duke probably is a bit stronger with NYC financial firms/banks, though. Both great schools. Different geographical niches. Rice engineering is more well known, but probably because it is larger than Pratt. You can't make a bad choice. Good luck!

Duke basketball is a lot better though ;)

Enjoy Rice, not going to convince you to change your mind since Rice is awesome. Rice was one my very favorite schools.

Prestige:
Duke > Rice
General School
Duke = Rice
Engineering
Rice >= Duke (except BME)

But one last piece of advise, I have no knowledge, but based on what people post on CC about IBank/etc recruitment, it seems Rice is not really up there recruitment wise.

Rice is better for engineering.

Duke is way better for finance on Wall Street S&T and IBD.

yea thats what i meant sorry!

Rice supposedly has lots more math/sciencey nerds. I love them by all means, but wanted a more school-spirit & frat-based social scene.
That's also a difference to note.

is anyone considering Rice as a non-engineering major?
