Duke vs. UChicago

Hey CC Community,

I'm deciding between Duke and UChicago at this point.

Both schools aren't offering me finaid or anything else so it'll be around 52-54k for both schools.

Right now I'm undeclared major for both schools.

I kind of enjoy the athletic/school spirit of Duke .. but I'm still not sure.

How big of a difference is there between Duke and Chicago -- future job recruiting, average salary, networking and internships?

thanks

Come to Duke if you love sports, school spirit is high which is also fun for alum. If you think you would instead like to fall in love with a great city…go to Chicago.

Duke probably has the edge overall but no one is going to argue you can’t have an incredible four years at U of Chicago! This is all about your temperament and style.

Congrats on two great choices. Chicago is a fantastic city…Duke is a fantastic college campus with stunning quads, sunshine and short pants many months…and great facilities.

What are you looking for in a school? I feel like I ask this question a lot but we really can’t help you until we know. :)

alum networks …depends on what you are looking for…our son is a recent grad active in a large Duke Club in his city…this is a perk of attending a larger college.

We live in VA and around here…graduating from VA Tech or VMI or UVA means “instant community”

But on a national basis…look at the alum pages for both colleges and think about your future…are you going to wander…are you going to be urban? Academic? In business? Duke Clubs are very large in San Fran, NYC, Boston and Atlanta…which is a nice aspect of the rest of your life if you enjoy supporting your school…

I am sure Chicago has its own alum culture. Sitting in a bar in one of the above cities was a big thrill for my son alum son…with a large Duke club for Final Four nights…
second son would probably be bored by that…

I can’t say much about UChic, but I’m sure their culture is much different. Academically, they are pretty equal if you are just looking at an overall spectrum. (Where UChic is stronger in some places than Duke, and vice versa.)

As far as networking goes, Duke has a very broad networking connection, and a lot of academic based clubs on campus promote networking. We have our own website to promote networking between students and alumna (Dukeconnect.com) and the career center is always active as a helpful resource. Duke alumns are usually very friendly, and they volunteer to be contacted. From my experience, it’s very easy to just chat up with an alumni (I ended having a pretty interesting conversation with one on the bus not that long ago. While I didn’t actually network then, he was very nice and willing to talk about his experiences, which seems to be pretty common.) Research internships are competitive during the summer, but I know multiple people who get them. I feel that starting salary between the two would be pretty equal; both Duke and UChic have strong academic reputation.

At this point, I feel that you should just consider what you want out of a university. They both have very different fields and reputations. I didn’t even apply to UChic because of its incredibly overemphasis on intellectualism. I wanted to have a bit more fun in college, so Duke was my definite choice.

UChic has a pretty big reputation to have large amounts of work and not as much of a social life. I can’t say much about the accuracy of this. I have one close friend who attends UChic and she seems to be enjoying it, despite the heavy work load. Duke also has a strong academic work load, but I feel the social life is far more prevalent and casual. If you enjoyed sports or recreation at all, Duke is an amazing choice. Sports (even those other than basketball) get students pumped. Football season was pretty fun this last year, our women’s basketball games were fun to attend (even though many didn’t attend), and of course, men’s basketball is in a league of its own.

hey! I actually am considering the same two schools.

I recently had a thread about it, and got some pretty good responses. You might want to check it out.

UChicago is where “fun goes to die,” according to Uchicago students interviewed by the Princeton Review

If you want to have fun and get a good education, go to duke.

I got into both UChicago and Duke this year. I’m choosing Duke over UChicago :)

UChicago’s a great school, and most of my friends there are content. While the campus is nice, however, if you venture off-campus at all, it is scary. I remember when I was transferring to the 55 Garfield bus near there, I really was afraid that I was going to be in trouble. I was the only non-black person on the street (people stared at me) and after getting on the bus, I was the only non-black person on the crowded bus too. It was a jarring experience.

With that said, the rest of the city is absolutely amazing. The only downside of that is a less robust campus culture and very subdued school spirit.

I, personally, chose Duke because of the faaaar superior weather (I whine endlessly every time I go home to Chicago for winter break because it’s so DAMNED COLD; I admit- I am spoiled now :P). I also thought that Duke would challenge me to grow as a person (the social scene is more diverse than at UChicago). In terms of fit, I probably “fit” better at Chicago, at least my personality post-high-school did (I didn’t drink; was studious and overwhelmingly intellectual). But now, having spent a couple of years at Duke, I feel that I’ve grown and changed so much more than I could ever have imagined. I think that personal development is a good thing and I know that had I gone to Chicago, I would never have left my comfort zone.

Source: I grew up in Chicago, spent 16 years of my life there.

^^about the weather. I crossed UChicago off my list after I visited the campus in April and it was snowing. Snow? in April? Heck no.

omg black people!

Please. Don’t even give me that crap.
I attended a 98% minority CPS elementary school. I think I’m a lot more race-conscious than most people out there.

It’s not the “omg black people!” thing. It’s the “omg black people in Chicago’s most violent area STARING me down with a you’re-in-the-wrong-part-of-the-neighborhood look.” If anyone (regardless of race or gender or age) walks around in that neighborhood alone at night, they won’t be safe.

First of all, congratulations !
Secondly, I think it depends of if you want to live on a campus or be part of the city like NYU, it depends of the weather too. Well, if you like sports, you should go to Duke.
How do you think you get in ? Do you think I can get into Duke ? this is my profile : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/909747-can-i-get-into-nyu-yale.html</a>
Thank you, and congratulations, again.
