Hey CC, the title says it all. I was curious about this and I came across this website. My son is very interested in Biomedical Research and Biomedical Engineering in general. Thanks in Advance.
It’s definitely Duke. Look up just how strong Duke’s biomed eng and research is on US news.
Thanks for your reply. I was just wondering what made duke the definite choice in this situation.
Duke has invested very, very heavily in BME and its program is amazing. One of the very best. That said, I believe Penn is in the middle of a major investment in the sciences–I’d look that up if I were you…new buildings, etc…
Penn has a very strong bio-engineering department. I encourage you to repost on the Penn forum.
Have him apply to both and then other, less competitive schools. Chances are good that he’ll get into neither.
Duke of course! It’s much more bme focused in comparison. Upenn is more buisness-based.
Also, Duke has an interinstitutional agreement with several other area universities, including UNC and NC State. This means that a Duke biomedical medical engineering student might be able to take some classes in the UNC/NC State joint biomedical engineering program as well. https://www.bme.unc.edu/index.php/about
Both are great schools. If he has a preference after visiting I’d go with that.
And also, factor in Northwestern in to the discussion. He was curious about Northwestern BME in comparison to these two.
Did you think about Johns Hopkins? They have a great BME department too.
Thanks for the response. I didn’t think that Johns Hopkins would be a good match because of its cutthroat environment. Do you have any knowledge on these three schools or do you know any other good schools similar to these?
The cutthroat environment thing isn’t really true. It may be a tiny bit more so than other schools, but not what I think you are imagining.
Then it might be a possibility but do you know other things like the student life or safety on campus at Johns Hopkins?
There’s a lot to do since JHU is right in Baltimore. It’s a huge city with a lot to do. You’d find more relevant information on the special board here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/johns-hopkins-university/
For campus safety, I like to use these forums to look at what people have to say: http://www.city-data.com/forum/baltimore/419547-john-hopkins-university-safety.html
I also use it to gauge an idea of where the generally safer/bad areas are. As in any city, it’s not going to be super safe with a guard on every corner. As long as your son uses common sense, he’ll be fine.
UPenn! It is incredibly strong in healthcare and biomedical engineering.
Here are the U.S. News Top Ten biomedical undergrad schools.

I would give serious consideration to Georgia Tech. Low tuition even for OOS, and a high acceptance rate.
