Duke's Pre-Med?

I'm going to be a Neuroscience major at Duke probably. I also want to go to medical school to become a physician or (hopefully) a neurologist. How is Duke's pre-med or pre-health curriculum/advising/program? I'm sure it's competitive, naturally at a top 10 school, but is it cutt-throat like at some other schools? Thank you and congrats to all the new Blue Devils!

Bump again. I’m in the exact same boat (Neuro major and all!).

And also, how hard is it to get into med school going to Duke?

I went on the campus tour the other day-- they said the acceptance rate into med school from duke is 85%.

Duke’s acceptance rate to medical school is generally between 80-85% for first-time applicants WHOM THE HEALTH/PRE-MED COMMITTEE AGREES TO RECOMMEND FOR ADMISSION TO MEDICAL SCHOOL–this does not represent all of the applicants from Duke to medical school.

I’m a current freshman with a potential major in bio or chem. Compared to the other top 10 schools, we definitely are not nearly as cut throat. Naturally, as with any academically successful institution, there are some kids who work far too hard. Currently in my Organic chemistry class, there were kids who were a few chapters done the course before the class even started. However, I surely was not one of these kids, and I have consistently scored higher than average on the tests. As for the cutthroat-ness, I have rarely seen anything in that respect. Almost everyone I knew is more than willing to help others out with anything academic, and I’m part of study groups in most of my classes. No one’s out to get you here, not the professors and especially not the other Duke students. We’re a community here, not competition. Come to a basketball game and you’ll see that.

My daughter is deciding between Duke and Upenn for pre med. She knows that the work will be challenging no matter where she goes but she is hoping to choose an institution that is supportive. She realizes she will have to work hard but she would like to have a little fun - not be miserable. We have been told Duke is a bit more nurturing - how would you describe Duke in that regard? How are the intro chem, physics and math classes? Is orgo even possible to do well in?

Its definitely possible to do well in orgo, or anything else for that matter. Professors are very supportive, and students are more than willing to help each other out. As long as your daughter is willing to put in a little work on a regular basis, she will really flourish at Duke.
