Dungeons and dragons on the common app

I'm not sure if should that I've been playing dnd with a group every week since almost the beginning freshman year on the extracurriculars list on the common app. If so, what heading should I put it under?

If you have room to list it…list it as an “Gaming Club” or “Roleplaying Gaming Club” or some such thing…the AO may not know a thing about D&D, so you’ll want to make it clear that it’s a gaming group.

It’s fine to list it, as long as you have room in the app…any academic, leadership or volunteer EC’s would be a higher priority to list.

The intent of the EC section is to allow adcoms to better understand who you are and what motivates you outside of the classroom. Based on this, as well as your description of your gaming, I would definitely include it on your applications.

Work to ensure that the manner in which you list it on your app places the activity in a positive light. You don’t want adcoms to perceive it as simply time spent hanging out with your buddies. Emphasize the creative aspects, commitment levels and ways that the game has developed you as an individual.

You should also definitely include any external references that would allow adcoms to put your activity in context. If your group attended conventions, contributed to nationally recognized web sites, or participated in regional events, it would help adcoms better understand how your group functions.

Back in the day (…yeah, back then we had real dragons… ), I was strongly advised against mentioning D&D at all, told that it would be considered geeky escapist nonsense and commitment to that would not reflect well on me. Times have changed and geeky is not necessarily viewed as a bad thing any more, depending on where/what you are applying to (maybe even escapist is OK some places), but still I second rmldad’s advice that you should only mention it if you can legitimately portray it’s influence on you in a positive light.
