Duquesne

You can stay at other peoples houses, they don’t care. You don’t have to sign out or fill out forms for anything, just go. Mmmm, staying over other peoples dorms… honestly, all of my friends are in my dorms, so I’ve never encountered this problem… here’s what I found with some digging

I believe that answers your question. Honestly, all of the close friends I’ve made were from my hall so it was no problem hanging out into the AM.

From memory, I believe you had the option to rank the living communities? I’m not sure about this because I’m in Assumption (honors college) so I said I wanted to be there, and it’s guaranteed. Plus, it’s the biggest freshmen accommodations so I didn’t mind :P

On another note, I’m envious of all of the freshmen out there that have the privilege of being able to come to school early (orientation program… don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds) - sophomores and up come back the Sunday before classes start. Everyone. Lame.

yeah, i thought about that too, that is kinda lame. and im not too worried about orientation, but thats prbly the thing thats on my mind the most, meeting everybody and all. Your really on the ball with these answers man haha thanks so much, i guess you remember how it was to be coming in and all. oh, and i was able to rank my learning communities, whee you lvie on the same floor as your community if thats what you mean.

Lol, no I’m just really happy that someone is interested in Duquesne. I originally joined this site because I was looking to go to school at Georgetown University in DC, and when I was rejected I started looking for Duquesne boards, which there were none. So I’ve felt kinda obligated to help out here, and it turns out I don’t mind it at all =) I do wish someone was there for me when I was a freshman so it’s nice to know I can help someone feel more comfortable with a situation that I had no help in.

Orientation gets better as it goes along. My roommate and I met before we actually went to school once to get to know each other, and so we stuck together by default and ended up becoming best friends =)

I’m not in a learning community because I’m in the honors college and we didn’t have to pick one. Last year they gave us t-shirts and 2gb flash drives as gifts for freshmen. The orientation thing changes every year, but from what I’ve heard, you’ll definitely get to go with your group (you’ll be assigned to) to go to lunch together somewhere (ex: Cheesecake Factory, Primanti’s, Fatheads, or somewhere else). Some orientation activities are mandatory while some are voluntary.

Wow…This is a HUGE help for me as well. I am an incoming freshman and I appreciate all the info. I just have one question. I was assigned to St. Ann’s and all…that part I understand. I was also given the room number G011. Do you have any clue what that means because I know others living at St. Ann’s with normal room numbers (302, 213, etc.)? I am a little nervous because I haven’t seen anyone else with that room number? Any response would once again be much appreciated.

hey, if anyone wants my facebook, send my a pm. As soon as i made my stupid facebook like a few days ago, all these people from school started adding me, and i really just wanted to network with people from school first… but i dont wanto add so many people frm duquesne and have them be put off by my having no friends on the thing, but if you guys wanto network with me, feel free to pm me and ill send you a link.

G stands for ground, as in, no stairs for you :stuck_out_tongue: Lucky! I’m pretty sure that if you had a B123 or whatnot, it would be basement, so I think you have ground.

i wanted to network with people from duquesne first, not my high school just yet, ive see n them for 4 years.

James, im glad your here man youve been reallyy helpful. ive been telling my roomates some of the things you told me on here, i sent them some info including the packing list. and im not too worried aobut the orientation, but of all the things, that is most on my mind… which i guess is good, which means theres nothing im too nervous about, but i dont think its hit me that im leaving in like a month haha. im doing rotc too btw, do you think ill be too overloaded with work if i join a sport or anything like that, or even with just rotc?

Hmmm… I’m not sure if I can give any advice on the ROTC/choosing a sport deal. You’ll know if you can handle adding a sport in within the first week or two of class I would think (my guess/opinion here, not fact or anything). Each teacher gives out a syllabus that says basically what you’ll be doing for the whole semester, so you’ll know at the beginning usually how many papers and tests you’ll have. As I’m not ROTC nor do I play a sport I can’t really say anything else about that.

There are the competitive sports and there are intramural sports. I’m not familiar with the competitive ones (the ones that travel/compete with other schools), but I know the intramural ones have sign-ups that are available throughout the year. Those require a lot less of a time commitment. There are plenty of clubs/activities/groups out there you can join too, like Student Government. (what I’m in). As a freshmen you are not allowed to join any Greek fraternity/sorority until the second semester.

Oh, and another thing, your major will have an impact on how much you can do. Science students tend to have less free time than say, a music major (this has no merit on how difficult the majors are, just some majors get a lot more homework).

Also, do they give you your roommate when you are assigned a room, because i was just given the number and am wondering if i am by myself.

I think you do… although I’m not sure. Try calling residence life perhaps? Search for residence life on duq.edu . I got mine in an e-mail this year instead of a letter like last year, but I’m a sophomore so I don’t know if it’s different or not. My e-mail did include my room number (which we picked at the end of last year) with my roommates name (which we also picked last year).

i got mine in an email as well. yeah, im worried that rotc, even though its a 50 min class, is going to be too much… idk if its even everyday or not. and as for a sport, i was never ever involvedi nhigh school, and it makes a huge difference when your in a sport. in middle school i went to a new school, and the moment i stepped on a field everyone had a lot of respect for me, its just like incredible, and it helps you network. id just like to row though, or maybe wrestle, nothing else. hell id rather play music, thats really my thing, that and medicine.

Well this sucks. I asked for a double room, but after talking with the staff at the residence life, room G011 is a single. How bad is it to be living in a single, and is there any way i can change it during the year?

It might not be bad at all if other rooms around you are also singles. You would probably have more quiet and privacy if you close your door, and lots of socializing if you leave your door open.

And if others around you are doubles, just make a point of hanging out in your neighbors’ rooms.

I know people that have loved it, hated it, and some didn’t care. You could always argue that it’s more expensive (which it is) and don’t want to pay for more (although I don’t think it’s too much more… you’d have to check). You could try requesting a roommate from residence life between now and the start of fall semester, and then asking to be placed with someone the following semester (people leave and transfer from semester to semester) in spring if you’re still in the same room and don’t like it. I find this kind of strange because I’ve only heard of there being not enough single rooms… maybe I’m wrong. I know in assumption there are only 2 or 4 rooms that have singles per wing, so there aren’t many (although I don’t know how many per freshmen building).

Yah I was kind of surprised as well. I requested a double room, so the single room will not cost any extra. I guess I’ll see what it’s like for the first few weeks and go from there.

What kind of laptop did you have at Duquesne? Would you suggest a Macbook, or is it not compatible with most of the classes? Thanks

My friend is currently deciding between a Mac and a PC after destroying her laptop with a large glass of water. I’m not really sure what to tell her, or you, as I’m not familiar with that kind of stuff. Music and art students tend to have Macs, so there is definitely plenty of them on campus. My roommate and I both have Dells. For the one class (computer/core class) you need to use Microsoft 2007 (which I hate personally). I just went to the library and did the short assignments that I couldn’t finish in class there. I think you can pick whatever and be fine, but you can call the school computer store and ask a professional opinion. Their number is 412.396.5645. Hours are 8am-5pm, but I don’t know if they have summer hours. Sorry I couldn’t help more.

they have summer hours.

Hi I’ll be an incoming freshman this upcoming Fall and I’m so glad I finally found a Duquesne Forum I’ve been searching for so long. Well I wanted to know what size Fridges does everyone usually get? I heard it can be up to 3 cu. ft. but someone told me that you can get a bigger one if you please. Is that true?

Put it this way, no one I knew had their fridge size checked. If you go a little over, no one will notice (4, maximum 5 maybe). Unless you are keeping hordes if water bottles (like my roommate), 3 cubic feet should be enough. I’d say 3 is definitely average.
