What is the Durham like?

Durham is okay, it has nice parts and it has really scary parts. I'm not a current Duke student but I live near Durham and I've spent some time there. Overall I'd say that the Duke campus is really nice, and you can always find something to do in Durham (or even Raleigh or Chapel Hill if you feel like campus-hopping).

is it more small townish or big city like?

It's definitely not a small town but it's not a big city. There is a lot of stuff to do, but you need a car to get anywhere.

I wouldn't really say Durham is the kind of place we, um, hang out. Relations with the city of Durham are pretty strained as it isn't really the safest place, but the university is trying to work on that (ie this year all freshman got to eat dinner then go to a Durham Bulls game for free). Still, I don't see inner-city Durham becoming a college town...ever.

Of course, there are a few places a short walk off campus like Shooters and Ninth Street (and by that I mean cosmic cantina!:)) that Duke students go to a lot. But yeah I definitely wouldn't call it a college-town.

The Duke campus feels as if it is divorced from Durham (compared to UNC and Chapel Hill). Students at Duke, especially frosh and sophomores, tend to live, sleep, breathe, and socialize at Duke. Duke and Durham seem like two distinct worlds that don't seem to integrate well (as compared to UNC and Chapel Hill). Although I am a student at UNC, I take classes at Duke and visit there quite frequently so I actually do know a thing or two about Durham and Duke. Durham has a few bars and low key restaurants. It seems to me that those students living off campus and juniors/seniors tend to be the ones who actually venture forth into Durham.

There's a documentary called "Welcome to Durham" that you might want to check out. To quote a lady from the trailer, "Durham is wild, yo." You can fidn the trailer online with a quick Google search.

...That's not a documentary about Durham as a whole. It's a documentary about a certain topic in Durham. It's not very representative of what life is like for people who AREN'T involved with that kind of crowd.

That documentary you are talking about is banned. If you want to get a copy of it or go see it, then you have get special permission from the Durham Police Department. The reasons are quite obvious when you come to understand the subject of the documentary.
