Dutch/people from the Netherlands unite! (please?)

I've searched the International forum for 'Dutch' and 'Netherlands' but all topics that pop up date back to 4 to 5 years ago. So hereby I am creating a new one!

Sooooo, HEY! Are there any Dutchies on this forum? If so - post away! I don't know many people that want to apply to an American university (even though I attend an IB school, did HAVO before that), so here we can all discuss the college application burdens such as SATs, ECs and essays.

Hope some will respond!

Here’s a smiley to make you less hestitant to post: :)

:)
I smile right back!

A shame I only just came by this thread, it would have been nice to discuss tests and essays with another dutchie (nobody really understands the application process here).

Are you currently applying or planning to? Or are you attending a US university? I recently applied to 7 universities and am now nervously awaiting a sign of life :)

Hello, Can anyone from netherlands help me because I just wanted to know about the reputation of university of twente for the major advanced technology, because I found it interesting but I do not know the reputation of this university or this major, can anyone tell me more of this university from his personal view.
Thanks

@TheSyrianGuy
Although I have never visited it myself, the University of Twente is overall known to be specialized in technical majors, and I reckon it is though to be very good for those types of majors. I do know that the specific major you are inquiring to is becoming increasingly popular according to its website, with 40 percent of all students being international. Maybe you could look up some rankings etc?

Hi there :)

I’m also a Dutch student, and I applied to Yale (deferred EA) and Harvard. Zoulikha, we already know eachother, but just wondering how you are doing?

@ Cattiee: hi to you! I guess very few Dutch people apply to American universities (at least I don’t know many who do), so it’s great to have another Dutchie here :)

@ TheSyrianGuy: I live pretty close to the University of Twente. Like cattie said, it’s a science-focussed university with a good reputation. I’ve been there multiple times and the campus is quite international. Still, it’s not in the centre of town (bit isolated), which is a drawback for me…

@cattie thank you for this but do you know any ranking sites for European or Netherlands universites ranking.
@artemislux what do you mean by not the center of town? like is there nothing to do there like cinemas malls clubs…etc and how far is it from Amsterdam and Rotterdam(and how much does the public transportation costs?
and do you think I can get by If I dont speak dutch in the university and still make friends even with dutch people?
thank you.

bump if anyone can answer my questions please

@ TheSyrianGuy… I’d like to answer you questions, but I’m not on CC that often anymore… Could you send me a private message with your Facebook/contact details?

Thanks!

Oh my what a pleasure it is to meet such ambitious dutch people haha! I have never met anyone from kaasland who applied to any ivy league uni.

@ ArtemisLux; i hope you’ll have a better chance at getting into harvard! What are you applying for and how have you build up to the level of ivy league education?

@ TheSyrianGuy; I think you’ll be better of at Delft technical university. As it is in the top 5 best technical universities from europe and its in the top 20 (or so) on the world ranking. Twente is small and its not a city for students. You’ll be better off at Eindhoven or Delft. Delft is in between Amsterdam and Rotterdam (about 15 min. by train which will cost about 7 euros (approximately 10$). Twente is like the outback of holland and it will take you more then half an hour to go to Amterdam.

So my advice to you is to look at other uni’s like Delft or Eindhoven. :)

@ Iz2012; Well if I spoke dutch I would’ve obviously applied there but there are almost no majors in english taught there that I want but in twente there is,and I find advanced technology as a major there interesting so,I just want to know if It has a well reputation there and I could have some fun there for example, if there are parties and malls and other stuff I could do there, I know its not like amsterdam or rotterdam, but still can I have fun there?

anybody?..

Oh wow, finally some replies to this thread!

@ TheSyrianGuy

Since I come from the Amsterdam area, everything outside of the metropolitan area seems pretty lame to me. Honestly, giant US-type of malls are nowhere to be found here anyway, so you won’t find them there or in Amsterdam. I’ve never really been in the University of Twente’s area, but from what I know there is not that much to do. I guess you can go Enschede or Arnhem for some clubs? But since you’ll be with plenty of other (international) students I’m pretty sure there are enough chances to have fun. And remember, Holland is really small so you can always take the train to Maastricht, Rotterdam, Utrecht or Amsterdam… takes about 1 hour to 2,5 hours depending on where you go  Btw, you can definitely get by if you don’t speak Dutch because Twente has a large international student body and almost every Dutch person is at an advanced level of English (and you can teach them if they’re not :))

@ cattiee

Yaaaay another Dutchie! Are you a regular Dutch applicant or are you in an international/american school?
I am a senior that has applied, so yeah I’m on the same boat basically, anxiously waiting for results. My chances are like 1% though, since I have relatively “bad” test scores and apply for significant Financial Aid. I’ve been accepted into an univeristy in London that I really love as well though, so there is already something I can be happy about
How about you? Where did you apply, how where you guided throughout the whole process etc?
I have applied to USC, U of Miami, Stanford, Columbia and UPenn - last three being my dream schools.

Now we can have a nice chat with fellow Dutch people until decisions come out haha… Good luck to all!

Oh yeah and @ ArtemisLux, obviously we know each other  I’ll respond to your message in a bit… keep forgetting :’)

Hi im a dutchie too lol, i’m not in international school or anything, just regular dutch highschool (VWO). I applied too several schools such as Rutgers, penn state, Upitt and osu

Wow, now there are four of us already! Maybe we should set up a Facebook group or something… But it’s very nice to ‘meet’ all of you. Just knowing more people in Holland are turning crazy with D-Day looming is a very comforting thought… Let’s hope at least one us will get in somewhere and make Holland proud!

Oh, and Zoulikha, don’t worry 'bout that! Just answer me whenever you feel like it :)

@ zoulikhahaha

I’m from a regular dutch school, VWO gymnasium. I applied to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Brandeis and Hamilton. I’m so nervous for the results to come out! Good luck :)

Bump! I wonder how you all are doing on your apps…

My first post here! Though I do have to confess that I’ve been lurking around here for quite a while now.

I’m in my junior year now. I’ll be taking the SAT’s in the spring. My top choices are Yale, Princeton and Stanford. I’m also looking at LACs such as Amherst and Pomona.

This thread’s been dead for a while so I hope someone will respond, haha!

I am dutch, born in Alkmaar, and currently living in Ohio;) Did VWO and ended up at Ohio University because I got a scholarship and it best fitted my budget, looking into a transfer after my second year here to a top university. If there are any dutch people interested in advice just send me an private message or send something here, I have connections of people at Ivies too;)
