EA 2025 Richmond

I must admit that video was cringeworthy. My SoCal daughter is also looking at schools in the south. However, I’m not worried about her sitting idly by in the face of racist situations or treatment that is not equitable, as the gal in the video admitted she did. That girl in the video sold out her ‘beliefs’ for popularity. Despite being in Southern California, my D21 seen some horrible stuff go down and she has taken a stand, and has even been threatened for doing so. The white bubbles exist in public ‘liberal’ schools too - let’s not kid ourselves. However, I have faith that GenZ, more than any other generation will ‘Be the change’. This video was disappointing, but it’s not going to stop her. Good luck to all! Also, there’s nothing wrong with loving avo toast. Lol

Just watched the video and I found her so obnoxious- she seems to think very highly of herself and very interested in promoting herself and her products. I wouldn’t base any opinions on her perspective!

I have a very liberal freshman there who is highly motivated for social justice, and anti-Trump of course. This was a concern for us, but I heard through the crazy election fall that it was okay. I’ll definitely check again into this.

My D is still waiting for Northeastern (RD). If Northeastern costs equal to/or less than UR (after counting scholarships/grants), we will choose Northeastern. Not because of the video. simply we just like Boston more than Richmond.

Thank you

You are missing the whole point of this conversation; someone posted a link to a video, disparaging a specific school in the SE, and a few of us are giving our opinions as to why we are encouraging others on this forum, who may be getting very excited about UR, to do their own research. That’s it.

Not at all. I am actually from the northeast and more on the liberal side. She was definitely well spoken but I would think she should be if she wants to be an actress and makes numerous videos on her youtube channel.

I just hate to categorize Richmond as segregated and racist because of this young woman’s video. It’s very important to do your own research and look at the whole picture instead of one person’s opinion/experience.

I agree. I’ve already been reaching out to other friends this morning and finding that (1) it seems Richmond isn’t a particularly political campus and (2) there are indeed kids who lean both ways politically.

I bet every college has negative YouTube videos.

Absolutely. I’m just sensitive about political issues and fit is important to D. Her main criteria is social fit at this point. Her list is made up of schools that check her academic boxes. Her choice will likely be made based on other things.

The aid at Northeastern was actually better than Richmond. So along with the other potential issues that made it a no brainer for us. Either school was going to affordable, but Northeastern came in a little bit better with grants rather than the loans at Richmond. Good luck in RD.

Unfortunately this in not one woman’s account. Richmond has a history of such events. I believe last year 3 African American students had racial slurs written in the doors of their dorm rooms that led to police investigations and action from the President. The Black Student Union then had to encourage students to report any further incidents of racial intimidation. It happened around Dr. King day if I’m not mistaken. It was in the news so I’m sure you can find the story. There are many stories on other sites from students that describe the instances of segregation not only race, but also wealth. There are certainly issues. It’s pretty well documented, however I think they are tying hard to improve in these areas. It just takes time.

Yeah package was definitely solid. I know the CSS profile is always more than FAFSA and they basically met our EFC anyway with loans so definitely impressive. Guess they really do meet 100% need with loans. Still very expensive though but we’ll just take loans like the rest of America no matter where I go.

As for the video, I definitely agree every school has its things people don’t like. I am going down to visit next week and one girls experience shouldn’t change your opinion on a school. I myself am a Republican but would’ve never voted for Trump because he’s not even a Republican and just doesn’t know what he’s doing and didn’t even have a political background.

Some colleges meet 100% demonstrated need, and a few of them meet 100% need without a loan. You can Google such a list.

Thank you.

I am sorry for any confusion. I just thought it would help anyone who hadn’t been aware of that before. I still like Richmond as a school, and I know that the academics and even social life are good. I am just not sure if I personally would commit there.

It’s all good. It’s so important for kids and families to really do their research to find the right place. So difficult this year when visits have to be virtual. Small to medium southern schools are likely to lean slightly more conservative, though overall schools and educators lean left. There are good and bad people everywhere as well as hate-filled extremists everywhere. As she mentioned in the video, she met some of the most wonderful people and had great classes and teachers (except theater). She didn’t like the “echo chamber” of UR, yet she returned to her familiar, mega echo chamber of LA. She was a homesick, aspiring actor. I am in NO WAY condoning racism - I hate the separation of ANYTHING based on race - we are all created equal. However, I just feel like it’s not right to call out 1 particular school for a problem is that is probably prevalent at other nearby schools. Maybe something good will come of this conversation and UR will rise to the top and become a leader on this issue. I suspect they will. Good luck to you!

hoping I could get some insight as to whether I may get in or not. I applied ED2 and decisions come out tomorrow (so nervous).

GPA: weighted is a 93.524 (4.0), unweighted with only core classes is a 3.77.
did not submit test scores
2 AP, 2 Honors (was explained why I wasn’t able to take more in my additional info section and by my counselor) and school limits to 3 AP’s a year and can only take 11th/12th grade
very strong counselor rec as well as teacher recs
ec’s: soccer captain + soccer all 4 years, student ambassador, leadership positions in community service, 300+ hrs of community service and others

i felt that my personal essay and the Richmond were both strong but that’s imo

I strongly feel you will get in.
