Will my school records compensate my SAT scores? Where else should I apply with this profile? I’m dependent on aid so that also matters. In these colleges I qualify for merit full rides so I thought I’d give them a shot.
I don’t think it works that way for the top awards like the DHS or the Paul Tulane, although it might for the Global Scholarship. Generally speaking the requirements for awards that are full tuition or more require both top grades achieved in the most rigorous coursework and top test scores. But since the Global Scholarship is specifically for internationals, where test scores might not be reflective given that English is not their first language in most cases, maybe the judging is different. I just don’t know for sure. Given that, I think the DHS, PTA and Stamps are long shots, perhaps extremely long shots.
I don’t understand your line about Tulane for RD after U Chicago, Yale, etc. You say you are applying to Tulane EA at the beginning, and indeed you must if you want any chance at these top awards. I am not sure what schools might offer high value scholarships based solely on GPA and other accomplishments, no matter the SAT score. You might focus on schools that are test optional like Wake Forest and see if any of them also offer high merit scholarships to internationals.
Oh alright. It was my general résumé prompt I use on my threads. It wasn’t updated after I applied EA to Tulane. I thought I read on the Tulane website that they consider leadership and community service. Hence I thought I had a shot at it.
On the other hand when I contacted the admissions board with the same concern, they said they reviewed all these application(s] holistically and hence I should apply.
I sure hope I atleast get in now.
@aravindsk
To be clear, they do consider those things, and probably strongly, but **when it comes to merit scholarships **not enough to overcome test scores that much lower than what is normally required. But for admissions, I think you will absolutely get in. You just made it clear that you cannot afford a school like Tulane without a lot of merit aid, so I focused on that. Your best hope seems to be the Global Scholarship, although you probably should try for the Community Service Scholarship as well.
Yes, I need a lot of merit aid. That being said, I’m writing my December 5 SAT’s. The admissions office said they could take it into consideration as well. Do you think I’d have a better shot at the aid if I could push my scores?Thank you for your input @fallenchemist.
@aravindsk
Yes, definitely. It looks like if you can get 650 or better on the CR (verbal), you might have an excellent chance for the full tuition Global Scholarship I mentioned. My intuition was correct that the standard score for the English based portion does not have to be as high, which makes sense. Have you taken the TOEFL?
Anyway, I think this represents a very exciting chance for you. The rest of your record is extremely strong. Take a look at http://admission.tulane.edu/international/intlscholarships.php and you will see the details. I like your chances for that award.
Thank you for the valuable input. I’ll work on it. I’ve applied EA and I’m anyway going to try for all the scholarships. Even if I don’t make the cut, I guess my interest would count. I haven’t taken the TOEFL but they said that I can send in my December 5 SAT scores if I want to compliment my application.
