EA UChicago=Not-So Competitive?

I'm surprised with the fact that UCHicago's acceptance rate for EA is really high..Why so? (i know it's a weird question)

Also, does it mean it is relatively easy to get in early?

You’ll hear this over and over on this thread: self selecting applicant pool.
It’s NOT easy to get into UChicago, despite that big acceptance rate. This is because people who are just applying to schools for the heck of it don’t apply to UChicago like they do to Harvard, Yale and things like that. Some things that might go into that are the odd essay questions (can’t copy-paste another essay for our questions) and that dreaded “where fun goes to die” slogan. Most people who apply here already know that they want to come here. So is it easy? No way!

What do you mean by “really high”? The EA admission rate this year was about 30%.

That EA rate was a little lower than the ED rates at Cornell, Penn, and Duke (all at or above 33%), a lot lower than Johns Hopkins ED (48%), and only a little higher than the ED rates at Dartmouth and Rice (both around 26-27%). So it’s really not out of line with early-round percentages at many of the colleges with which it is competing.

Looking at the difference between early and regular round admissions, there’s not really a huge difference between the EA and regular rate. The EA rate was about 125% of the regular rate, which was around 24% (taking into account deferred EA applications). Most colleges’ EA or ED rates are 200-300% of their regular rates. Given that everyone says early application pools are stronger than the regular pool, and that the termination of EA/ED at Harvard and Princeton have probably increased the competitiveness of the Chicago EA pool, it really doesn’t look like there is a significant advantage in applying to Chicago EA vs. RD. MIT may be the only other elite college with such consistency between its early and regular admission rates.

^Agreed. UChigao’s admission rates are roughly the same as other high calibre schools.

^I agree with JHS and KMad. Also, those who apply EA are seriously intent on going to UofC and therefore, they will have (in general), applications that express this passion. That’s not to say that those who apply RD do not have a passion for UofC, it’s just that those who apply EA to any school, not just Chicago, are really bent on going to that school. Hence, the acceptance rates for most schools for EA or ED will tend to be high.

When will UChicago release their 2013 stats?

Not surprisingly, if you do the math, nearly 50% of each entering class was admitted EA.
